Biography of Michal Plis.

Sculpting with light through investment-grade paintings & kinetic vessels for modern corporate & private collections. Michal Plis Fine Art is a Melbourne-based contemporary art studio dedicated to the creation and curation of investment-grade abstract works for modern interiors, private collections, and corporate environments.

The Roundism Art Movement ⭕️

Founded by Principal Artist Michal Plis

, the studio is the birthplace of the Roundism Art Movement. This philosophy rejects the sharp edges of traditional abstraction in favor of the "Infinite Loop"—exploring the geometry of emotion through continuous, harmonious forms. Our works are not static; they are "sculpted with light," utilizing fluorescence, transparency, and optical reflectivity to create dynamic perceptual experiences that evolve throughout the day.

Services for Collectors & Industry Professionals:

We partner with interior architects, art consultants, and private collectors to deliver works that elevate architectural spaces.

Bespoke Commissions: Large-scale paintings and sculptures tailored to specific spatial and lighting requirements.

Corporate Collections: Curated acquisitions for lobbies, boardrooms, and luxury hospitality projects.

Private Sales: Direct access to the studio's primary market inventory and "Wet Paint" releases.

About the Founder:

Born on Poland’s Pomeranian Baltic coast and now based in Melbourne, Michal Plis brings a unique multicultural and distinct aesthetic perspective to his practice. Following the foundational 2025 exhibition "Glimpse of Another Universe," the studio is currently focused on expanding the Roundism narrative through collaborations with designers and galleries.

Michal Plis is a Polish-born, Melbourne-based multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersection of light, material and imagination. Through abstract paintings and innovative sculptures, he invites audiences to glimpse a personal universe shaped by scientific curiosity and spiritual reflection. Born in the early 1980’s on Poland’s Pomeranian Baltic coast, Michal was introduced to art by his late mother, Renata Plis, a painter and sculptor. After migrating to Australia as a child, he continued to paint through his teenage years and was recognised as one of the top art students at his high school, Eumemmerring College (Glenagles Junior Campus Years 7 to 10 and Hallam Senior Campus Years 11 and 12, later renamed to Hallam Secondary College). During Years 11 and 12, Michal had the opportunity to be taught by two artists-in-residence with varied artistic backgrounds, which formed a strong foundation for his passion for fine art. Though encouraged by the artists-in-residence to pursue formal art education at the Victorian College of the Arts, Michal chose his own path and later spent two decades working in information technology, while art remained a private pursuit. He stopped creating art in 2010 due to the emotional attachment between his art and the loss of his mother, Renata. After 12 years, in 2022, Michal returned to art with renewed purpose and discovered its therapeutic and transformative power. He began developing multispectral works that use materials to compose with light; his practice draws on optical phenomena such as fluorescence, transparency and reflectivity, combined with varied light sources to produce shifting perceptual experiences. This long-term exploration is central to his concept of “sculpting with light,” which he will reveal in the 2025 exhibition Glimpse of Another Universe. Since 2024 Michal has been training at the Melbourne Studio of Art with sculptor Ilona Herrainer. Her background in contemporary sculpture and various mediums has been an important influence on his evolving practice. Alongside mentorship, Michal supplements his learning through independent research, art history study, and the selective use of generative AI tools to support both technical and conceptual development. His work is inspired by nature, astronomy and the patterns woven into human life and the cosmos. Deeply influenced by a wide range of artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Wassily Kandinsky, Stanisław Szukalski, Barbara Hepworth, Pablo Picasso and Yayoi Kusama. Michal combines intense focus with a neurodivergent perspective that shapes his unique way of seeing. He also draws from movements including Cubism, Impressionism, the Renaissance, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Suprematism and Geometric Abstraction. For Michal, light is not simply a medium but a language, a way to reveal hidden dimensions of reality. His favourite inspirational song is "A Way to Focus the Mind" by The Fires of Ork (a collaboration between Biosphere & Peter Namlook). The track includes excerpts from the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Scorpion", where a holographic Leonardo da Vinci meets Captain Janeway; the scene’s themes of creativity and altered perception resonate strongly with Michal and influence how he represents experience in his work. Looking ahead, Michal plans to develop large-scale paintings, sculptures and installations that embody his art movement, blending invention with expression. As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, he draws strength and inspiration from his faith in the Creator, Jehovah God, and seeks to honour that source through creativity. His aspiration is for a future, reflecting biblical promises for mankind, in which economic barriers no longer limit artistic expression, artists pursue ambitious projects, and collectors and the public can access and circulate art openly. "Intersection Within Triskelion" at 📍Hosier Lane freshly painted on 30 Aug 2026.

This piece I created at the intersection of Rutledge and Hosier intersection, The feeling I had being in the middle of a triskellion And the feel of the situation with all the tourists and the colours and the history of the place. Also the busy-ness of the day, the crazy N***s protesting nearby and the oblivious passers by heading to the n***s, the kids having fun making mini graffitis and the noise around me. For this piece I took my earbuds off. my first time there.

We'll see how long it lasts 😎

You can check when it's listed on Street Art Cities under Michal Plis once hunters hunt it

Was made with Melbourne Street Art Collective brady bunch. Lots of fun as always.

My mind is a limitless well. I am creating my own abstract universe. I'm not governed by the pop culture.

"Tattersall Pulsar" behind the scenes at my first Street Art mural with Melbourne Street Art Collective.

A mural from me, painted during the Melbourne Street Art Collective meet on Sunday 23rd August, 2026.

Based on Roundism Art Movement which I founded in 2025 and my sculpting with light style including the use of blacklight activated paints (bring a blacklight or blue torch to see the artwork light up).

This is the representation of Tattersall Lane in Melbourne Australia on that day of 23 August 2026 and Section 8 and the lamp and little colored lights above. I have a form of synesthesia where I translate the feelings and atmosphere and the location into color and shape.

It's also giving me an opportunity to promote my art movement and my sculpting the light style in a more public setting. In a way pop-up exhibition. Stay tuned for future public art that you can come and have a look if you're in Melbourne.

Thank you to Melbourne Street Art Collective for making me feel welcome as a new member and fellow senior artists providing some tips for a noob street artist.

Thank you to Steve and Sonia from Vievero Stories and Bitter Munky for their amazing filming and interview skills. Definitely all this is out of my comfort zone.

Dimensions: Approx 1.5m x 1.5m
Medium: fluorescent and non-fluorescent spray cans and acrylic markers as well as stencils etc.
Location: Tattersall Lane, Melbourne Australia
Date: 23 Aug 2026

My new street artist profile on Street Art Cities app is as well.

"Cinis Source" Sculpture

This is the inspirational sculpture that led me to conceptualize this abstract red light. It represents red danger and red embers of lava but also juxtapositions the spent passion of life and people and things we do in life. This is what sometimes life is like, so full of problems and trouble but also of satisfaction and success. It helps me represent some of my experiences in life. Both good and bad and helps me to understand a little bit more the human nature.

I got the inspiration from the two years of covid lockdowns in Melbourne inspired by the shape of the COVID-19 bacteria, it led me to conceptualize this light represented by the protruding dendrites and the red color both representing that balance mentioned above. Those two years were incredibly painful for me. Emotionally, physically and mentally felt like solitary confinement, especially here in Melbourne when you could only go outside for a single hour. I was alone in a tiny half underground apartment studio. It forever changed me for some things for the better and for some things for the worse.

It is of course under the roundism art movement and in my sculpting with light style. This sculpture was shown at the 2025 landmark exhibition in Altona and in the recent 2026 exhibition at Mount Waverly, Melbourne.

MEMORY: As this exhibition reaches its final day, I am reflecting on the lineage that made this body of work possible. This exhibition marks my late mother, Renata Plis, turning another year.

My artistic talent originates with her. This showcase, and the creative engine behind Cinis Ardor Vitae (exhibited in July 2026 at Track Gallery in Mt Waverley), stands as a direct continuation of her creative legacy. She would have deeply appreciated seeing these light-reactive forms in space.

We begin packing the gallery tonight as the exhibition officially concludes. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us in person, supported the setup including Arts and Media teams, also those who tuned into the YouTube live streams, and supported from afar. Deep gratitude as well to the local Melbourne businesses who hosted our exhibition posters across the community.

Select sculptures and major works from the exhibition remain available for private placement via Saatchi Art marketplace or my website. To inquire about provenance, spatial placement, or acquisition, please send a direct message or connect via the studio catalog.

Additionally, for those looking for a thoughtful gift for their family or friends or special occasions can visit the gift shop via my website as well. Catalog link in first comment below.
