ARTWORK FOCUS
ADRIAN JURRA TJUNGURRAYI | YUNALA

Adrian Jurra Tjungurrayi paints Yunala, a significant site and tjukurrpa (ancestral stories) connected to a rockhole site located west of the Kiwirkurra in the tali (sandhill) Country of the Gibson Desert.

Recalled from his mind’s eye, Adrian Jurra paints Yunala in experimental geometric tessellating forms and refined, subtle tonal shifts that vividly conjure the shimmering salt lakes that characterise this Country. Upon the canvas, sinuous lines oscillate on with visceral energy, tracing the interlaced root systems of the native flora that share the Yunala name, and whose tubers can be identified by detecting similar patterning in the sand. The artist’s signature finger-like patterns depict the distinctive spiralling stem at the top of the plant.

Currently presented at Alcaston Gallery Viewing Rooms is Timothy Cook: Parlingarri Jilamara, a significant Private Collection of paintings from 2003 – 2007 by the esteemed Tiwi artist.

Rendered in turtiyanginari (locally sourced natural pigments), much of Timothy Cook’s practice is defined by circles, concentric rings and dots, which articulate the Kulama ceremony – a three day initiation ceremony practiced during the late wet season, Jamutakari, when a concentric ring can be seen around the moon alongside the harvest of the kulama (yam) which shares its name.

Timothy Cook: Parlingarri Jilamara is presented at Level 3, 50 Market Street, Melbourne until 19 June. View the exhibition online: https://www.alcastongallery.com.au/melbourne-gallery/current/2220-timothy-cook-parlingarri-jilamara?gallery=gallery

VALE | MS D YUNUPIŊU (1949 – 2026)

Beverly and Anthony Knight, Adriana Del Medico and the team at Alcaston Gallery sadly mourn the passing of Ms D Yunupiŋu, a highly respected senior Yolŋu artist and elder who leaves such an immense artistic and cultural legacy.

An artist of great significance, who emanated strength, courage and resilience, which radiates through the unique artistic gift that she offered to the world. Her art was loved and appreciated by collectors, curators and art lovers alike and her presence as a truly singular artist and woman will be missed by all. In this difficult time we are comforted now by the incredible legacy left by the Yunupiŋu sisters and brothers.

We offer our deepest condolences to the Family and Extended Family of Ms D Yunupiŋu and the Artists, Directors and Staff at Buku Larrŋgay Mulka, who offered her unwavering love and support throughout her life and career.

ARTWORK FOCUS
RENE SUNDOWN | NGURA TALI – SAND DUNE COUNTRY

Rene Sundown paints her memories of the Ngura Tali, sand dune Country, the landscapes near Erldunda in the Northern Territory where she was raised. In fields of cream and gold, Sundown’s painting blends memory and place, evoking the cracked earth, shifting dunes and sun-warmed grasses of the central desert landscapes, intersected with bold linear compositional markers delineating sites of cultural significance.

“These are the paintings I have been doing. This is my thinking and painting (sand dune) memories. Memories of what I saw, sand dunes that we played on. When I’m painting my feelings became strong, and all my memories come back. I’m thinking of those sand dunes and then painting them. This is the sand dunes and spinifex grass. Sand dune Country was our home.”– Rene Sundown

This major painting is available for viewing at the Alcaston Gallery Viewing Rooms & Head Office, Level 3, 50 Market Street Melbourne
