Allan Jeans once said that when Darrel Baldock played well, St Kilda never lost. It is a testament to Baldock's level of performance that his presence helped largely to create St Kilda's most successful era.
He was dubbed 'Mr Magic', and that is an appropriate title for someone blessed with incredible ball control and evasive skills. To be under six foot tall and play at centre half-forward is proof of his greatness, but while all modern-day references to him concentrate on his unique ball-handling skills, his toughness should never be forgotten.
He displayed enormous resilience in withstanding constant physical batterings from bigger and more burly opponents. Baldock was the most highly sought after footballer in Australia when St Kilda secured his services. He was appointed captain in just his second year with the Saints and with fellow Tasmanian Ian Stewart, formed a deadly combination. It is doubtful if any footballer has been able to use his body better in jostling for position, and Baldock could extricate himself from situations that would trap every other player.

Remembering Jon Lilley on the first anniversary of his passing.
(21 April 1947 – 21 October 2025)
Having been named as an emergency for St Kilda’s ultimately victorious 1966 grand final clash with Collingwood, Jon Lilley made his senior VFL debut in round 18 of the following season. It proved to be his only appearance for the year, but in the next couple of seasons he was an almost permanent fixture in the seniors. Although he lacked pace, he was strong and determined, and put in some good performances both in the back pocket and across half back. When he retired in 1971 he had played 49 VFL games for the Saints and booted two goals.
Lilley also played in Oakleigh’s 1972 VFA premiership.

Happy 69th birthday Maurice Wingate.
Born 19th of October 1957.
First appeared as a Reserves player in 1975 before making his senior debut the next year. Lightly used in his first two seasons, Wingate's career peaked with 13 games in 1978. He played 10 more in 1979 but began to fall out of favour in 1980, and while he remained on the list in 1981 he failed to play another game.
He joined Nathalia in 1985, and to Kyabram as an assistant coach in 1986 before moving to Canberra League club Ainslie in 1987. That year he was chosen to play for the ACTFL against the VFA but had to withdraw due to injury. His side won the premiership that year, and in 1989 he was promoted to assistant coach.
In 1990 he was again selected to play for the league against the VFA and as Ainslie won another premiership Wingate was their best and fairest player.
In December 1991 Wingate was appointed non-playing coach of Belconnen and remained to the end of 1993.
