🎨 Journeys to Achievement: Narration Series with Zhou Xiaoping

How can art bridge worlds, histories, and cultures?

In our next Journeys to Achievement narration series, we are honoured to welcome Zhou Xiaoping — a Melbourne-based artist and curator whose work has reshaped conversations about cross-cultural exchange in Australia.

Born and educated in China, Zhou has spent more than three decades living and working alongside Aboriginal artists in Arnhem Land and the Kimberley. His collaborations with artists such as Jimmy Pike and Johnny Bulunbulun have inspired powerful exhibitions that weave together Chinese and Indigenous Australian artistic traditions.

As the lead researcher and curator of Our Story: Aboriginal Chinese in Australia, Zhou continues to explore how shared histories can deepen understanding and connection across communities.

✨ Join us for an inspiring evening of storytelling, art, and reflection — as Zhou shares the creative journey behind his life’s work and the stories that continue to shape it.

🌕 Journey to Achievement | Her Talk: Become Yourself 🌕

The Chinese Museum, in partnership with 悦心荟 (Yue Xin Hui) and proudly supported by the National Foundation for Australia–China Relations (NFACR), hosted Her Talk: Become Yourself — a vibrant celebration of women’s voices, creativity, and empowerment. ✨

The afternoon brought together women from across Melbourne to explore heritage, confidence, and connection through storytelling, art, and performance. Illustrator and author Gabrielle Wang, who is also the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2022–2023 and a Chinese Australian Achievers Award winner, shared her professional journey, offering heartfelt insights into creative growth, resilience, and inspiration — encouraging more women to pursue their passions and express their individuality. 🎨💬

The event opened with a spectacular Sichuan opera face-changing performance, setting an exciting tone for the afternoon. 🎭 Special thanks to the talented performer .lgea for delivering such a captivating show.

From moonlit melodies and graceful fashion to laughter-filled games and shared moments of joy, the event captured the warmth and strength of sisterhood under the full moon. 🌸🌕

Yesterday, Chinese museum in partnership with came alive with the sound of laughter, conversation, and the rhythmic click of mahjong tiles. Our Mahjong Community Pop-up brought together people from all walks of life — families, friends, and new faces — to share in the joy of this timeless game.

Guided by experienced players, both newcomers and long-time enthusiasts learned strategies, exchanged stories, and celebrated the rich cultural heritage that mahjong carries across generations.

Over cups of tea and friendly games, connections were made, memories were created, and the spirit of community shone brightly in every round. It was wonderful to see how this simple yet deeply cultural pastime continues to bring people together — bridging language, age, and background.

🌕 Mooncake Making with Joey — A Taste of Tradition and Creativity 🌕
This Mid-Autumn Festival, the Chinese Museum was delighted to welcome Joey Leung, an acclaimed pastry chef, who shared how Hong Kong celebrates this cherished festival — from dazzling lantern shows to the art of making lotus seed paste mooncakes with salted egg yolk.

Joey then guided participants through a hands-on mooncake-making demonstration, showing every step with care: rolling the custard, adding the filling, dusting with flour, and pressing it into the mould — and voilà, a perfect mooncake ready for the oven! 🥮✨

Inspired by her mother’s love for Tieguanyin tea and the joy of Yumcha, JOY JAUNE introduced a creative twist this year — a limited-edition mooncake featuring the floral elegance of Tieguanyin tea paired with the rich indulgence of Belgian chocolate, beautifully blending Chinese tea culture with Australian pastry craftsmanship.

Several lovely volunteers joined in to experience the joy of crafting their own mooncakes — a truly heartwarming way to celebrate tradition, creativity, and community under the full moon. 🌸🥮💛

To top off the experience, the audience also had the chance to taste Joey’s fabulous, creative mooncakes, enjoying the unique fusion of flavours that captured the spirit of both East and West. 🍫🍵
