There is so much to love about this portrait of Gladys Tasker; her beautifully styled hair, her elegant attire, but most of all, that she chose to pose whilst knitting! I’d love to know what she’s making and for whom. Any ideas?

Gladys was born in 1892 in Richmond, VIC. At 29, she married Robert Duxson, an ANZAC who served in the 8th Light Horse Brigade. Whilst he enlisted in 1915 it appears he was deployed to Egypt as part of the mounted brigade, thereby avoiding Gallipoli. Robert was transferred to the 1st Field Squadron in 1917 and supported the famous infantry charge at Beersheba. He was discharged at the close of war, returning home in 1919 after four years of service. Two years later, he married Gladys.

There is little further information on Gladys or Robert, however I did find a lovely letter written by 14-year-old Robert in the Children’s section of The Leader where he wrote about an upcoming picnic and ball. His letter was accompanied by a cheque for 17/- which he had raised for ‘Cinderella’s Cot’ - a charity that used donated funds to purchase hospital beds for children. How beautiful is that!

Whilst I couldn’t find too much more information on the couple, it appears they were survived by a son and spent afternoons watching Robert play cricket for the Sunshine RSL Cricket team. I’d like to think Gladys sat with her son at her side, watching her husband play whilst she finished her knitting.

This little photo was found with Thomas Tasker’s war portrait. It’s a lovely studio portrait of Thomas, his wife Ada, and three of their children - Gladys, Harold and Dorothy. Judging by the children’s ages it must have been have been taken around 1907.

I particularly love the children’s fashion. Gladys is striking in her tailored coat / dress with its buttons off to the side and a large bow in her hair. Harold’s matching pinstripe sailor suit with ruffle is so sweet, and Dorothy’s high-collared lace-trimmed dress and high socks quite the outfit. They are all so well groomed and fashionably dressed. It’s such a beautiful portrait!

Sometimes you turn over a photo and the answer is right there 🩷

Thomas Tasker (1860-1938), a Welsh station master and father of five, enrolled in the Australian Imperial Force in 1917 aged 48. It appears that he had tried to enrol previously but had been rejected due to his age. Thomas’s enrollment papers describe him as having blue eyes and light brown hair ‘turning grey’. He served in an administrative role in the 3rd Military District for 385 days where he would have supported enlistment of many soldiers sent to Gallipoli, the Western Front and the Middle East.

Thomas was married to Ada Peace and the couple had five children; Gladys (1892-1996), Dorothy (1900-1991), Harold (1903-2002), Horace (sadly 1908-1909) and Vivian (1918-2009). It appears that this photo, and the others it was found with, belonged to one of Dorothy’s two daughters.

I’ve managed to make contact this evening with Dorothy’s great-grand daughter. I’ll share the other photos that were found alongside this one while we wait for her to reply 🤞🏼♥️

This photo belongs to a large collection found in a rusty old tin. Many images were moldy, buckled and stuck together. Over time I’ve managed to separate a few of them, including this little piece of gold.

I really love this image of a family relaxing outside of a milk bar / cafe. If you zoom in, you can make out some Coca-Cola and Peter’s ice-cream advertising, ‘Milk Bar’, ‘Cafe’ and ‘Confectionery, Ice-Cream, Cold Drinks’ lettering, and a string of decorative Australian and British flags adorning the window. What a little cultural snapshot!

The fashion suggests this photo was taken in the 1950s, with short sleeves and sunglasses suggesting a warm summer’s day. Perhaps this was taken on a summer holiday?I It makes me wonder what delicious treats they might have eaten 🤔

Life has been very busy lately and I’m finally sitting down to post some photos in the hopes of reuniting them with their families 🤞🏼

I’m excited to post this beautiful wedding portrait taken in Allen Studios, Collingwood in Melbourne. Allen Studios operated in Collingwood from the 1880s - 1950s (imagine the changes they witnessed in that time!). Their latter studio ran from Smith Street from approx. 1900 - 1950s, making this portrait one of their last.

There is a lot to love about this photo. I particularly love the bride’s gown and veil! The gown is very fifties and the detailing on the veil’s edge is stunning!

There is little information about this couple, however we do know that Collingwood was a very multicultural suburb in the 1950s with many post-war migrants from Greece, Italy, Lebanon and Macedonia in particular settling in the area. It’s possible that this young couple is part of one of these communities. I also wonder if the groom is the same man from a photo I’ve previously posted. I’ll put it in my stories for your thoughts.

With school going back tomorrow, I felt it only fitting I post this beautiful collection of school memorabilia. This mum is just gorgeous - amongst classroom photos she has kept her son’s awards, school reports and athletics bib. You can just see the love and pride in this collection. All of these items were kept in a little album. I would absolutely love to find her son and reunite these with him.

From what I can see, his name is Peter B. O’Donnell (middle initial is printed on a school awards list) and he attended Balgowlah Heights Primary in Sydney’s Northern Beaches from 1971-1974. He looks to have excelled in sports and competed (and placed!) in Scots College athletics competition. Perhaps this was regional championships? Despite competing there, I don’t believe he attends Scots. it looks like he moved to Sydney Grammar School in mid-primary, with multiple academic awards from 1975-1977 (the pink cards).

I found an O’Donnell surveyors at a residential address in Balgowlah Heights but can’t get much further. The property appears to have been sold last year. I can’t seem to find Peter’s family tree or a record of him on Facebook (although have messaged some Australian Peter O’Donnells on there who appear to be within his age bracket). I’ll post these photos on the Northern Beaches pages and see what happens 😊 I love some of these classroom photos so much that I’ll post them separately for a closer look (the kindy photo with everyone holding a favourite toy is so sweet!)

It’s going to be a hot weekend. We all know there’s apparently only one way to relax and that’s with friends around a table full of coconut cocktails and ci******es 😂🧉

This little Polaroid really is fabulous. It screams fun - I would love to be a fly on the wall! Unfortunately no names or location, but it looks somewhere tropical ☀️

I hope you’re keeping cool on these hot summer days. A beautiful little photo of people at the beach. Judging by the swimsuits, this must have been taken around the 1940s.

There’s a lot to love about this image - from the beautiful women’s swimsuits to their swimming caps, to ‘grandpa’s singlet tan line’! Wouldn’t it be brilliant to have this photo in colour.

The framing of the photo is beautiful - the grand expanse of the ocean, the cliffs in the background. Just beautiful!

What do you like best about this photo? Do you think these are two separate groups of people? Or one large groups of family / friends?

Happy New Year! How are you spending your summer? I hope it’s as fun and colourful of these four ladies!

I don’t have any information on who these women are, but they sure know how to travel in style - from their dresses to their hair, to their kitten heels. This photo looks to have been taken in front of the Wat Phra Kaew Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok, Thailand. What an adventure that must have had!

Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas to those who celebrate. A few Christmas snaps from Pat’s collection (reunited with her earlier this year). I’d hoped to post them last week, but better late than never!

Love how beautifully dressed the children are - still adore those glasses frames! Whilst still likely sweating in polyester, Santa looks far better dressed for the Aussie climate than his northern counterpart! What do you think? 😊
