Grainger Museum

Grainger Museum Closed for installation. Reopening Monday 25 May 2026.

Percy Grainger preserved the evidence of his creative life - his archive, personal library and many of his possessions - in his Museum on the campus of the University of Melbourne, the city of his birth. Grainger’s extraordinarily full life also included pioneering work as a folk music collector, innovative music educator, social commentator, clothing designer, and inventor in the field of Free Music experimentation, resulting in a diverse and eclectic collection.

Grainger superfans and fashion appreciators, this one’s for you.

Grainger Research Resident Sophie Knezic will explore Percy Grainger’s amateur activity of making clothes from towels as the subject of our final talk for 2025!

The talk situates Grainger’s practice within a lineage of bold fashion and cultural movements—from dandyism, bohemianism and androgyny, to anticipating the Peacock Revolution of 1960s psychedelia and the gender-fluid direction of 21st century haute couture.

Sophie’s residency research project, Fancy Pants, aims to bring to international attention the historic significance of Grainger’s Towel Clothes Collection and has inspired her own experimental project of conceptual fashion.

🎟️ 'Peacock Aesthetics': Grainger's Towel Clothes, Gender Fluid Fashion & Performative Flair.
📅 Thursday 11 December.
🕒 6pm to 7.30pm.
📍 Grainger Museum.
