The City of Joondalup’s Invitation Art Prize returns this October, bringing ten brand-new works by artists from across Western Australia to Joondalup Contemporary Art Gallery.

To kick off the 2026 program, two special events offer a deeper look at the stories behind the art.

Performance of Gender by figurative artist Sarah McBride is a new exhibition coming to Old Customs House this October, exploring gender as something performed rather than fixed, using the experiences and representation of cross-dressers as its central focus. Drawing on Judith Butler’s idea that gender is produced through repeated acts and social expectations, the exhibition considers how clothing, appearance and behaviour shape the ways gender is recognised and understood.
For cross-dressers, dressing beyond conventional gender expectations can be an expression of identity, but can also attract scrutiny, ridicule and discrimination. The exhibition considers what cross-dressing reveals about the performance of gender, and the consequences of moving beyond its expected boundaries.
The exhibition brings together a compelling body of oil paintings and sculpture, combining the richness of traditional portraiture with expressive brushwork, bold colour and contemporary materials. Influenced by the Old Masters, McBride’s paintings explore the figure through layered paint, abstraction, collage and carefully considered composition. Clothing, mirrors and reflective surfaces become important elements within the works, adding depth and complexity to the experience of looking. The paintings move between moments of intimacy, confidence and vulnerability, with the expressive handling of paint giving each work its own character and presence. The sculptures extend these ideas into three dimensions through materials including latex, mosaic and mirrors, adding another dimension to the exhibition.

Congratulations Artsource Artist Yasamin Khadembashi for winning the Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize tonight at the The Lester Prize opening WA Museum Boola Bardip.

Judges’ comments provided by Alan Dodge AM, John McDonald and Bryony Nainby:

“Bold, striking and ambitious, the work impressed the judges through its imaginative and adventurous use of materials. Monumental in scale and heroic in conception, it brings political ideas into a fantastical setting with a confidence that extends across subject, technique and form. The judges particularly admired the artist’s willingness to take risks, embracing material experimentation and dramatic scale to create a work of considerable presence and vitality. The artist did not play it safe, but their bravery paid off.”

Groundswell Open Call EOI Vessel

An invitation for artists to extend their practice, to develop new ideas, work at greater scale, experiment with new forms and methodologies, or bring greater visibility to practices that have not yet had significant institutional exposure. Vessel’s unique scale and architecture provides a space for artists to test possibilities and present ambitious work to new audiences.
Emergent is understood broadly. It is not defined by age or career stage, but by practices, ideas and approaches that are developing or moving in new directions. This might include an artist at an early stage of their career, an established artist pursuing a significant shift in practice, interdisciplinary or experimental approaches, or work responding to changing cultural, social, environmental and geographic conditions.

Last few days to visit Time-based Encounters at Wanneroo Regional Gallery!
Final day Saturday 3rd October.

A collection of modern and contemporary video works are now on display at Wanneroo Regional Gallery. Time-based Encounters is a curated survey style exhibition that broadly traces the developments of media art from its historical origins through to contemporary practices.

The exhibition has four themes: new media from the 1960s and 70s, contemporary art, First Nations experiences and slow / mediative art.

It features significant video works from international and national artists and is delivered in partnership with the National Gallery of Australia, Sharing the National Collection program.

Sriwhana Spong explores the way art can draw upon fragments of history to reimagine past events. In this image “Costume for a mourner”, Spong reanimates
the Ballet Russes performance Le Chant du Rossignol (The Song of the Nightingale) 1920.

The exhibition is open until 3rd of October 2026.

Early music ensemble, HIP Company HIP Company , return to the stunning acoustic of Old Customs House, for an intimate musical vignette of 16th and 17th century England, celebrating works for viol ensemble and voice.

This concert brings together four of Western Australia’s leading viol proponents: Krista Low, Hannah Herriman, Tadhg Sudlow and Andrew Tait; playing replicas of historical treble, tenor and bass viols. Joining them in song are David Valsamidis (UK bass-baritone) and Bonnie de la Hunty (soprano and Artistic Director).

Time-based Encounters features significant video works from international and national artists that are on loan from the National Gallery of Australia as part of Sharing the National Collection. The Sharing the National Collection program gives suburban, regional and remote galleries a chance to access the more than 155,000 artworks contained in the country’s premier art collection.

Wanneroo Mayor Linda Aitken said Time-based Encounters was another significant coup for Wanneroo Regional Gallery and demonstrated the City’s commitment to making arts and culture accessible to the local community.

New media art emerged in the 1960s and 70s as artists began to explore new technologies. “The performance is cathartic for me, but also incredibly confronting for an audience... Hold your breath for as long as possible... literally doing that in front of a 16mm film camera, and continuing until I passed out, literally reeled back and people could see that this was really happening: this person was holding their breath until they passed out. It absolutely dramatised the notion of performance". Mike Parr
