Congratulations to Stephen Welsh, the First Prize winner of the Allan & Peg Lowe Award!

In a dark, cavernous environment, a metal contraption is just moments away from displacing a seashell. The shell, a beacon of light against the gloom, symbolises the increasingly rare beauty of a disappearing natural world. In using a combination of photographic and fine art techniques, Stephen's work provides a crucial warning: As we continue to explore, prod and make changes to our geological environment, every action that appears so small to us, creates an earth-shattering change to all living creatures. The sharp juxtaposition of the shell's illuminated, elegant curves to the industrial machinery reveals that such light can very easily be snuffed out by our own selfishness.

Any fans of dark comedy here? You'll have a cackle at The Roses, which is Ferntree Gully Film Society's movie for this month.

Directed by Jay Roach, we are taken to the domestic bliss of Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Olivia Colman) Rose's marriage. When Theo's career falls apart and Ivy's career takes off, this idyllic family life soon develops some thorns. It's a light remake of a cinematic classic worth seeing!

Screening is on Monday, 26th of October at 7pm in Cinema Europa, Village Cinemas Knox. If you'd like to see future films the FTG Film Society has to offer, you can sign up as a member now! The link for membership details is below. The membership fee covers all the remaining films for this year.

One of the most rewarding experiences as an artist is seeing a work develop before our eyes. This is certainly the case with Crystal's incredible dragon! But rest assured, there is no magic involved. You could also create a work like this through the step-by-step guidance of our professional artists who run the Monday Painting class! Both Ross and Gaya are specialists in oils and watercolours, respectively, and will help you to embrace the challenging nature of these mediums.

This class runs on Monday nights from 6:30pm-8:30pm, making it ideal for those who are working or studying. Each class costs $25 per week.

No plans this weekend? Why not come over to The Hut to see our "Members' Annual" exhibition? Now, with the warmer weather and longer days, you can enjoy our sculpture garden while you're here. There's some work by members who have been involved with FTGAS for decades. See if you can spot any familiar names!

We are open all weekend from 11am-4pm, so come and enjoy our art inside and outside!

The Ferntree Gully Arts Society would like to thank Linda Robertson for undertaking the daunting task of judging all these amazing entries. Linda is a Melbourne-based artist who mostly specialises in life drawing and has exhibited throughout the eastern states and abroad.

We would also like to thank Jackson Taylor for opening our exhibition. We appreciate the support, especially in the midst of election season!

Additionally, thank you to everyone who entered. Without your work, we wouldn't have such a wonderful and varied exhibition. Give yourselves a pat on the back!

Miniature and doll's house enthusiasts, we have an exhibition for you! Shirley Dougan's "Ancestor Row" will be on display at The Hut from the 8th of November to the 20th of December!

"Ancestor Row" is a fictional miniature street that encompasses all kinds of architectural eras. Shirley incorporates her passion for family history into her work, especially through naming her miniature stores after them. These buildings are also created with both store bought and recycled materials, the latter of which has been evident in many of Shirley's other works! If you want to see how an artist thinks outside the box, this is the sort of example that will inspire you.
