Shout out to Knox City Council. In response to the recent article by our member Blair Darragh, published in The Historian and more recently Ferntree Gully News, Council have attended to the Claret Ash tree planted by the former Governor of Victoria Sir Rohan Delacombe on 4th July 1969, to commemorate the Shire of Knox becoming a city. Great to see historical research having an impact.

97 children from the local primary school over 2 sessions at Ambleside recently. Shout out to our amazing volunteers for making this such a treat for our little visitors. And how about those wonderful old-time outfits the children wore 😊

In February 2024 KHS wrote to Knox Council requesting that a memorial be installed with the names and date of internment for souls buried in unmarked graves at the rear of the original cemetery before the extension in 2000 - a practice that continued to the mid 1970's. There are approximately 200 such souls.
KHS recently provided feedback to Councils proposed FTG Cemetery Masterplan and again reiterated the need to memorialise those interred in unmarked graves. On Monday night (December 15th) the Masterplan was adopted and we are pleased that our request has been supported and that a memorial will be incorporated. Our full submission was included in the Agenda.
Sadly not all those buried were given names, sometime the only indicator was a date of internment but that shouldn't mean that they are not recognised. Sometimes on our cemetery tours people who knew of family members without headstones, learn of their burial at this spot and take a moment to sit and quietly reflect.
