There and Back traces a long, circular journey through place, time, and memory. Bringing together paintings, prints, and ink works made across several decades, the exhibition spans artist Peter Bitmead’s life before Tasmania, during his years living there, and following his return. The works operate as records, reflections, and allegories, addressing environmental loss, history, war, and human vulnerability.
Taken together, the works in There and Back form a modest but resonant archive of lived experience. They depict neither grand narratives nor heroic gestures, but instead attend carefully to the fragile intersections of history, place, and responsibility. The exhibition reflects a circular journey—geographical, emotional, and ethical—returning not to the same place, but to a deeper understanding of what has been lost, what remains, and what still matters.
There and Back again is on display at TAC until 13 June.

🤫No words.
🖼️One artwork.
🤡🤡Two clowns.

Tis’ the grand unveiling ceremony at the Masterpiece Gallery and it’s finally time to unveil the latest, most prestigious new artwork. But unfortunately, there’s nothing to unveil. Only two arrows pointing to exactly where the supposed masterpiece should be hung. Enter two art handlers, dancing with said masterpiece, entirely unaware of their lateness and the fact that they’re being watched. The simple task of hanging up a piece of art quickly becomes a hilariously drawn out portrayal of persistence, partnership and performance anxiety.
Masterpiece promises a theatrical experience like no other. The fusion of mime and live music invites a broad spectrum of audiences – of all ages and backgrounds – into a space where connection is made not through words, but through presence. In a world often consumed by haste and noise, it offers a rare space for simplicity and shared joy. This is complemented by a playful critique of the art world, the humour of common workplace dynamics, and the ageless allure of slapstick.
