Enjoy an afternoon in Tharwa and learn the joyful, meditative practice of slow-stitched coiled weaving as you listen to wonderful live music.
Wiradjiri artist Rechelle Turner will guide you through the process of stitching and shaping your own coiled piece using raffia. As your hands work, enjoy rich and soulful music by Wallabindi – a Wardandi Bibbulmun Noongar, Yamatji and Burmese singer and songwriter.
By the end of the workshop, you will have the start of a coiled piece to take home and continue growing using the techniques you have learnt. All are welcome – no experience is required and materials will be provided.

Dr Christiane Keller will deliver an artist talk in Gallery 2 surrounded by her exhibition, Weaving the Coast. Find out more about this artist and her fascinating work, which is inspired by the landscapes and environments of the South coast of NSW.
Trained as an anthropologist, art historian and curator, Christiane has spent the last 20 years working with Aboriginal artists and their communities across Australia. She learned twining, coiling and string making from fibre artists in Arnhem Land and worked extensively with the Tjanpi Desert Weavers in the Central Desert. Both experiences had a profound impact on her life and on her art making. Using natural and recycled materials, her works draws its inspiration from nature while transcending perceived barriers of utility and sculptural form.
Her art practice developed parallel to a busy work schedule as researcher, curator, film maker and collections manager. In the last four years she established her own studio and teaching space and participates regularly in exhibitions in Canberra and interstate.
During the talk, Christiane will demonstrate the process uses to develop her large-scale woven artworks as well as sharing how she interprets South Coast rock formations in sculptural form. You can ask questions about how the works are made and what informs her practice during the demonstration.

TOXIC is a solo exhibition by Adelaide Worcester, a Canberra-based artist working in mixed media, sculpture, and textiles. Her practice uses everyday materials to explore themes of power, trauma, and mental health. Her work is visual storytelling that aims to disrupt silence and make space for empathy and meaningful change so that workplace bullying can be dismantled and toxic workplace cultures can be challenged and changed for the better.
Adelaide uses bold storytelling presented often in miniature diorama or the language of allegory to raise awareness of toxic workplace culture and the systems that enable harm, such as complicity, silence and victim blaming. Darkly humorous, Adelaide’s work provokes discussion and invites empathy and change.
TOXIC is on display at TAC until 19 September

V for Viola - in a musical alphabet: Robert Harris has had lots of fun researching for the upcoming Midweek Music Gathering developing a musical alphabet starting with B for Beethoven and the Beach Boys through P for Puccini and Elvis Presley and all the way to V for Viola and Vivaldi!
Join Robert on Tuesday 15 September for a multi-media presentation about music for the viola.

Join exhibiting artist, EASS Award winner and recent ANU graduate Karen McSwan Silsby in a workshop exploring her mixed-media creative process.
Karen’s process aims to transform an overwhelm into a positive. In this workshop Karen will carry you through the process of taking the evidence of something that makes you feel anxious and small (like an article or news headline), and create instead, a joyous artwork to keep and display with pride.
Karen says:” Bring images of something that weighs on you and transform it through collage, paint, and stitching. Across three hours, you’ll tear things apart, reorganise them, soften or amplify them, and stitch new meaning into the layers. Come as you are. Leave with something powerful, expressive, and entirely your own.”

The Gypsy Jazz Project (GJP) will perform at the August Lakeside at 5 event. The GJP is a Canberra-based quartet playing 1930s Parisian “hot club” jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt. Featuring Bruce Rose and Sverre Molland on guitars, Anthony Irving on double bass and Steve Rouch on clarinet and vocals, the GJP plays hot string swing jazz that will bring a smile to your dial and get your hands clapping while your feet tapping. The band plays regularly at jazz venues in Canberra and neighbouring regions, as well as festivals, private functions, weddings, vineyards and cocktail parties.

Especially on birthdays hits the stage these school holidays, capturing the joy, excitement and concerns of twins and a sixth birthday that one of them doesn’t want to have. Through play, music, and audience participation, children step into the story as active co-creators, experiencing the ups and downs alongside the twins as the navigate big feelings and embrace their differences. Deepen the experience in a post-show workshop with trained educators. Workshop participants will have fun learning some drama skills and trying out ‘real -life’ drama games.

TAC’s Make a Mess art class participants (ages 6-9) have their works on display in TAC’s Landing Space. The artworks were inspired by artist Sir Frank Bowling and were produced by ‘pouring’ paint before adding further textures and patterns to make each artwork unique. The process was lots of fun and very messy!

Two dynamic percussionist’s take to the stage in Coexistence, a percussive feast for the eyes, ears and the curious mind.
No action without reaction – Coexistence is a compelling showcase of contemporary percussion performance. Sound artists Alexander Meagher and Jesse Vivante present an expansive visual and sonic odyssey: arty, bold, and memorable. Coexistence is a full-length double-bill concert. It features Meagher’s A Brilliant Seagull, a lush exploration of musical storytelling through traditional percussion practice, paired with Vivante’s Omni-Omni, an avant-garde journey with percussion, electronics, and movement. A Brilliant Seagull and Omni-Omni were developed as part of Speak Percussion’s Bespoke Emerging Artist program 2023-2024. This program is presented in association with Musica Viva Australia.
