STEPHEN STOCKWELL & LISA-JANE STOCKWELL
Sibling Rivalry

'When you are looking at my contribution to the Sibling Rivalry Exhibition, I imagine that one question that may come up will be “Is it art?” As a life-long supporter of art-life integration, it is a question I ask myself a lot as I seek the aesthetic in the everyday. The question was given some poignancy when, in my youth, Queensland’s famous Flying Artist, Mervyn Moriarty said that, unlike my sister Lisa-Jane, I have no artistic talent at all - (actually what he said was “didn’t show any obvious painterly inclination”). While accepting Mervyn’s judgment, it has not stopped my pursuit of the artistic expression that is our human right and I have been lucky to find nooks in the artistic world where my lack of talent has been an advantage. Punk music for one.'
- Stephen Stockwell (catalogue extract)

'I have never put the paint brush down since. Over 46 years I have painted landscapes, people, flowers, dreamscapes, and all the new things I see when I travel. So that’s why I paint. Because it feels natural and right to commit to page or canvas my emotional response to what I am looking at. It is a joyful way to process my feelings about what I see. The act of painting brings me great peace. I feel the wonder of a moment in a place or person and express their essential essence as I perceive it, through my body, down my arm, through my hand and onto the page.'
- Lisa-Jane Stockwell (catalogue extract)

With the upcoming return of Nowhere Fast Redux ( https://openseason.live/events/nowhere-fast-photo-exhibition ), as part of the 2026 Open Season Program, we wanted to show support for the rich indie music scene in Brisbane.

We are inviting musicians to present a stripped down version of themselves as part of an experimental series called 'Raw Sounds'.

The first gig in our bar area is local punk band 'Bubblegum Haircut', a three-piece rock band combining passionate lyricism and lively sound.

"I've always taken a bit of an interest in Hindu religion. Kali was one of my most interesting Hindu deities. She's the female goddess and she's also the ultimate female goddess, but she also is the protector of women and children and the mother goddess, as well as the goddess of death and destruction. And in her rage, she actually ended up going and cutting the heads off all these people who were robbers after they murdered a holy man." ~ Sam Bullock (video extract)

Defenders of Latin America 2026

"This is called Defenders of Latin America. I did this recently, of course, look, I've been to Venezuela twice myself and actually have been to Cuba a few times as well. Looking at Donald Trump's offensive in removing Nicolás Maduro so he can get his hands on the oil once again. And so I got inspired by a lot of the murals I saw in Latin America. The fist with the Venezuelan and Colombian flags punching Donald Trump in the head and knocking his teeth out and his N**i patch on his chest. Because basically America continuing to behave like fascists to have no respect for these countries' sovereignty. But carried out acts of international piracy by attacking Venezuelan and Colombian ships in international waters under their flags, which is actually an act of international piracy. So I did the ideology of Maduro. Hugo Chavez, who was president, I saw his last speech when I was in Venezuela before he passed and was there at his final speech, even though I was as sick as a dog at the time.." ~ Sam Bullock (video extract)

Sam Bullock with his sister and part-time carer Jo. Both came in yesterday to approve things, so now open to the public is Sam's exhibition, 'The Roots of Resistance'.

"Resistance grows in the fertile soil of Asia, Africa and Latin America, coming from the grassroots. The colonial history of subjugation that these nations go through is the breeding ground for resistance movements worldwide. When you look at any of the revolutions in these countries, history reveals the origins of rebellion and the persistent struggle against oppression." ~ Sam Bullock
