ā€œDance Anywayā€
The storm will come regardless.
What you do in the downpour is up to you.
Choose joy. Dance anyway.

The rain in this piece might be symbolic, but we’ve all let circumstances beyond our control steal our peace… whether it’s a hard season, an unfair situation, or someone else’s mood.

This piece is about reclaiming that space. Refusing to let external chaos stop you from enjoying your life. We only get one shot at it: make the most of every moment, right where you are.

I actually started this piece way back in June! I’ve never painted rain like this before. Fittingly, the hot mess of my initial underpainting ended up being the secret weapon for building those textured, moody layers.

I just need to put her into her frame and she’ll finally be ready. She has a secret behind her which I’ll reveal in another postšŸ˜‰.

I called this piece: ā€œI Said… Noā€.

ā€œā€˜No’ is a complete sentence. I will give no explanation, no softening, and no apology. I do not owe you a justification, nor will I compromise my limits to make you comfortable. I will not say it again.ā€

I recently painted this piece and entered her into the The Non Gallery Noosa Art Prize. Unfortunately she wasn’t selected as a finalist but I’m so proud of her and what she means for me.

For a long time, in a past relationship, my limits were systematically erased until refusal was no longer an option. This piece is the embodiment of the strength I needed in those moments of silence and compliance given under duress… the unbridled, incandescent fury I should have reached for every time a boundary was crossed. She is the woman I wished I could have been: ablaze with absolute authority and indignation. Her fire is the wall that should have always been there. She is fierce, strong, and unyielding. Her boundary is set, and it cannot be questioned.

She is approximately 60x90cm and I custom framed her myself in Tasmanian Oak and pine. As she did not make it through as a finalist for the Noosa Art Prize (which is acquisitive) she is now available for purchase.

ā€œSurrenderā€ - Trust the fall... the wind only carries those who let go.

This piece is currently hanging thebrisbanegallery as part of their Tempest exhibition. She is about letting go, not fighting to hold on so tightly to control, but rather trusting that everything will be just as it should be… even if it’s not what you may have been pushing so hard for.

ā€œAscension in Pinkā€
Lifting gently into lightness, where beauty simply… is.

This is the fourth piece I have currently in Aspire Gallery - Brisbane Art Gallery for their Flourish exhibition. I painted this one a little while ago but I wasn’t ready to let it go until now.

Peonies are special to me, something about their soft layered petals speak to my heart. I love to simply look at them… their beauty lifts my mood.

I love painting beautiful things for beauty’s sake alone. It’s cathartic while I’m creating them, and soothing when I look at them later.

I feel like we could all use a little more beauty in our lives at times. 🌷

ā€œA Gentle Cadenceā€
A quiet melody of grace, blooming in its own sweet time.

I’m very late in posting this, and it’s already hanging in Aspire Gallery - Brisbane Art Gallery as part of their Flourish exhibition.

Life is just feeling like a lot lately, perimenopause is kicking me in the bum daily, and social media is low on my list of priorities. But I have been back in the studio and I have something very special coming soon.

This sweet magnolia is just 20cm square, unframed, and at only $130 I painted her to be a beautiful addition to anyone’s original art collection, but especially someone just beginning. There is something truly magic about owning an original piece of art that everyone should get to experience🄰

Sometimes you just need one piece to break the spell… and ā€œA Wild Unfoldingā€ was that piece for me.

After a period away from the easel, I felt completely stuck. With all the overwhelm in my life, the precious little time I did have in the studio, I found myself unable to even start… not knowing where to begin or what to do. It was a mental struggle I was experiencing across other areas of my life too, when facing even the most mundane of tasks.

Without knowing what else to do, I grabbed an old canvas from the back of the studio and decided it owed me nothing. No tight control, no heavy expectations, and no rules.

I questioned myself over and over again about whether or not to include a portrait. Everything in me wanted to default to a face because I’m so drawn to portraiture and the deep feelings a human face evokes in my work. But in the end, the decision to step away from a portrait was the right choice… to drop the pressure that the strict rules of proportion require, allowing myself instead to let the beauty of the blooms guide me. I chose Magnolias in particular because they break out of a tough protective shell to bloom into such a soft and tender flower.

ā€œOut of the quiet stillness, a fierce and untamed momentum takes root.ā€

I started with an energetic mix of soft pastels, spray paint, acrylic and alcohol inks, and gold leaf, before sketching the reaching magnolia blooms in charcoal and finishing with layers of oil paint. The final image is wilder and less refined than my other works… far more raw, but brought to completion with the exact same care and attention as all my other work.

It became a cathartic celebration of uninhibited creative energy. It was the exact breakthrough I needed to move past the paralysis and reclaim my momentum at the easel.

I’ve left this piece raw and unframed, painting the edges to complement the artwork so the movement wraps around the canvas.

I dropped ā€œA Wild Unfoldingā€ off to Aspire Gallery - Brisbane Art Gallery on Saturday morning after being officially accepted into Aspire Gallery - Brisbane Art Gallery Flourish exhibition alongside the rest of this floral series!🌸✨

Sometimes a painting has to wait for you.

I finished ā€œA Sweet Inhaleā€ right before life became completely overwhelming and forced me to step away from the easel for a while. For a long time after she was done, I simply didn’t have the bandwidth to face social media or put her out into the world. She just sat quietly in the studio, waiting.

Looking at her now, her message feels even more fitting.

She is part of a floral series born from a deep craving for beauty during heavy seasons… a deliberate attempt to create an emotional sanctuary when life felt like too much. ā€œA Sweet Inhaleā€ is about true presence. She’s about pausing, turning inward, and actively absorbing a moment of stillness and warmth when everything around you is moving too fast.

ā€œIn the quiet space between thoughts, beauty finds room to breathe.ā€

I shared part of her beginning layer, vibrant paint markers and intuitive gold leaf but that’s as far as I got with sharing. She was refined in layers of oil paint and represents an intentional choice to focus on joy and softness.

She’s framed in a custom dark-stained timber frame that pulls out her inner light, and I recently submitted her to Aspire Gallery - Brisbane Art Gallery for their Flourish exhibition.

I’m glad I gave us both the time we needed.

I’ve been waiting to announce this.

A little while ago I quietly entered ā€œUnboundā€ into the Lethbridge Gallery small scale art awards. She was shortlisted from over 600 entries and while she didn’t make it into the physical exhibition she is available to purchase in their online gallery.

I’m once again blown away to have been selected and so grateful to have the opportunity.

The Brisbane Rotary Art Show catalogue went live yesterday and this morning I got the call… this piece has found its forever home already.

A lot of people resonated with this particular piece, and I received so much feedback about the way it made different people feel.

It was such a deeply personal piece for me it was hard to let it go… like losing a little piece of my soul: my past, my history, a captured moment in the journey that has made me who I am today. But I’m so glad it can go on to touch someone else’s life, make a difference to them, and contribute to their own journey.

She’s sold… within hours of the presale catalogue going live last night! 😳 The exhibition doesn’t even open until this weekend.

I entered this piece into Aspire Gallery - Brisbane Art Gallery ā€œPetite Pieces - The 100ā€ competition and was selected as one of the 100 artists across Australia to be included as a finalist… an honour by itself. But to sell so quickly? I’m humbled, and so happy that she has found her forever home. 🄰
