Vienna Secession THE OFFICIAL SITE OF THE ASSOCIATION OF VISUAL ARTISTS VIENNA SECESSION In keeping with the motto that adorns its facade—“To each era its art.
(740)

To art its freedom.”—the Secession hosts an international program that explores current forms of artistic expression in solo and themed exhibitions. It is a sounding board for the aesthetic and critical discourses on art, culture, and society that define our era and keenly aware of their political significance. The Secession is an important forum for young experimental art, but its mission also encompasses prominent established positions. Essays, catalogues, symposia, and lectures supplement, document, and communicate the program of exhibitions and events.

--

JJJJJerome Ellis

The accompanying publication features a conversation between JJJJJerome Ellis and the artist and a poem by curator and writer . The texts are complemented by images taken by a camera installed inside a bird feeder that Ellis set up when they began working on the exhibition and which became a source of joy during the process. Each copy of the publication contains a dried flower, in a nod to the flowers drawn throughout the installation.

Bernhard Leitner. SOUNDSPACESCULPTURE

Bernhard Leitner conceived the publication accompanying the exhibition, compiling the materials and drafting the book design. Previously unpublished notes, theoretical reflections, sketches, and photographs by the artist from the late 1960s to the present form the book’s core. A new essay by the musicologist Stefan Fricke as well as reprinted notes by the art historians Hermann Kern and Gerhard Storck provide insights into Leitner’s art.

This year’s Gerhard and Birgit Gmoser Prize for Contemporary Art, Vienna Secession goes to .sciarrone. The jurors – Ramesch Daha, Karine Fauchard, Philipp Fleischmann, Barbara Kapusta und Eva Schlegel – chose the winner of the prize, which comes with a cash award of € 5,000. The prize will be awarded at the Secession on 14 October 2026, at 6:30 pm.

The jury explained its decision as follows: “Kia Sciarrone impressed us with his political, critical and poetic artistic practice, which stood out amongst the large number of submissions of the highest artistic quality. His works explore the complexity of history, sexuality and social heritage – an important perspective within the contemporary art scene.”
