ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | ODA TUNGODDEN

Oda Tungodden (b. 1992, Bergen) is a Norwegian artist based between Bergen, Norway, and Cape Town, South Africa. Her practice considers the many factors that shape the ways we understand ourselves, one another and the world around us.

With an MFA from the University of Bergen and a BFA from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town, Tungodden works primarily with painting and figuration, while also extending her practice into spatial and relational forms.

At the heart of Tungodden’s work is an interest in human experience and the ways people connect with one another. Her work creates space for conversation and reflection, often bringing together different perspectives, places and experiences. This interest in connection also extends across cultural and geographical boundaries, creating room for encounters and shared understanding.

Join us for a Botanical Collage Workshop in Stellenbosch, inspired by Hazendal Gallery's current exhibition, Soft Escapes. Facilitated by Chloe Obermeyer of CreatewithCleo, this workshop explores nature-inspired collage with pressed botanicals, photographic imagery, and abstract elements, creating layered compositions through a playful, intuitive process.

The experience begins with a guided tour of Soft Escapes at the Gallery from 10:30 to 11:00, followed by the workshop in the Golf Mezzanine from 11:00 to 13:00. All materials are provided, with a welcome drink and canapés included.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | Amber Skye Alcock

Amber Skye Alcock is a South African artist who grew up on a smallholding in KwaZulu-Natal, an upbringing that continues to shape her practice. She now lives and works in Cape Town, having graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2022, where she received both the Simon Gerson Award and the Judy Steinberg Award for Painting.

Working through surreal painting, Alcock explores the ethics of care, using animals as symbolic and psychological protagonists to examine the shared archetypal and ethical terrain between humans and the more-than-human world. Her practice holds unresolved tensions in suspension rather than resolving them, tracing the place of the animal within art history, the shifting relationships between humans, animals, and the natural world, and her own fluctuating sense of helplessness and agency.

Animals become mirrors in her work, occupying a shared emotional terrain through which vulnerability, and even violence, can be explored. Through uneasy juxtapositions of horror and humour, Alcock creates spaces in which familiar relationships become strange again, inviting a renewed sense of attentiveness.

For this body of work, Alcock steps away from the certainty of oil paint toward the lighter, more provisional language of watercolour and coloured pencil on paper, embracing accident and intuition as a way of slowing down looking itself.

Since graduating, she has exhibited regularly in South Africa and internationally, including with the AVA, Kalashnikov Gallery, Arch Enemy Arts, and Nanny Goat Gallery.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | Gabriele Jacobs

Gabriele Jacobs (b. 1997, Johannesburg) is a Cape Town based artist who works predominantly with animal imagery, using it as a lens to explore contemporary concerns that are both environmental and societal.

Graduating from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, where they completed an MFA in 2022, their practice looks to examples from nature that contradict the heteronormative framing imposed by western hegemony. By turning to animal subjects to speak about q***r identity, Jacobs positions non-heterosexual life not as an anomaly, but as something entirely at home within the natural world.

Through sculpture and painting, Jacobs honours the act of self-acceptance and q***r love, holding space for forms of belonging that exist beyond convention.

Jacobs' work has been shown as part of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair with Tatjana Pieters Gallery (2020), and was awarded 2nd place in the New Breed Art competition exhibition at Oliewenhuis Art Museum, Bloemfontein (2021). They completed residencies at the Nirox Foundation (2023) and Lemkus Gallery, Cape Town (2024).

By exploring imagination as a faculty of fantasy capable of reshaping belief, Amber Skye Alcock opens new ways of understanding humanity's relationship with the natural world. This relationship unfolds further in Gabriele Jacobs' practice, where close observation of nature gives rise to hybrid beings, revealing deeper connections between human, animal, and environment.

Together, their works transform looking into an act of care, reflection, and possibility.

NOW SHOWING | Soft Escapes

"Each moment of time is a beginning."— James Carse

Soft Escapes explores play as a restorative mode of being in an increasingly productive and outcome oriented world. Inspired by James Carse's concept of the infinite game, the exhibition considers play, imagination, and moments of pause as forms of engagement grounded in active curiosity and possibility.

Across painting, sculpture, and mixed media, the exhibition brings together artists whose practices unfold through acts of looking, wandering, and making. Moving between the sensory and the speculative, these works create spaces where play becomes a shared language for exploring meaning, inviting reflection on interconnectedness and healing.

Rather than a detachment from reality, Soft Escapes proposes temporary departure as a form of renewal, encouraging us to pause, move beyond measurement, and rediscover the joy of presence and play.

ARTWORK FOCUS | Umhambi - Lisakhanya Ngqoba

Woven from memory and water, Umhambi holds the shape of a home that has learned to keep moving. Square patterns rise across the surface like blankets laid across a flooded floor — grey with white lines, the bright checks of ityali, the soft familiar weight of everyday comforters pressed into service as barriers against the rising water.

The weaving becomes a way of archiving what mops and cloths could not hold back. Each intersecting thread recalls a blanket once soaked through, wrung out, and laid down again — objects that carried both flood and family, that softened the edges of displacement while bearing its weight. In recreating these patterns, the work traces a history of a travelling family in search of greener pastures, movement folded into the very structure of the fabric.

The choice of material is deliberate: the same cloth used for amabhayi, the white blankets braided and beaded across the shoulders of Xhosa women, and for traditional skirts. Here, the blanket is not background but body — it holds warmth, holds stories, holds people together, whether wrapped around visiting family or laid across a flooding threshold.

Umhambi sits in the space between shelter and survival, asking what it means to keep an archive alive through labour, repetition and care. The water may recede, but the blankets remain — folded, washed, and returned to use, carrying the physical and metaphorical weight of every home the family has had to remake.

ARTWORK FOCUS | Growing a Ribcage – Jesse Martin Davis

Originally developed as part of Jesse Martin Davis's graduate body of work, Growing a Ribcage takes on new resonance within What the Body Keeps. Transforming a reclaimed dining table into sculptural ribcages, Davis explores how memory is carried through both the body and the materials that shape our lives. Once a place of shared meals, conversation, and silence, the table holds traces of domestic history, becoming a metaphor for how objects, like bodies, preserve lived experience.

The ribcage itself evokes protection, care, and familial connection, while its hinged construction allows it to shift into multiple configurations, reflecting identity and healing as continual processes of becoming. Drawing on his experience as a trans man, Davis reimagines transformation as an act of agency, connecting personal identity with intergenerational histories of protection, resilience, and belonging.

ARTWORK FOCUS | Bianca – Katja Marsiglia

Bianca marks the beginning of Katja Marsiglia's Entangled Fragments series and became the foundation for the works that followed. Drawing on the archetype of Aphrodite, the sculpture explores ideals of femininity, beauty, and the ways women are often shaped by the act of being seen. Deliberately faceless, Bianca becomes less a portrait than an experience, inviting reflection on identity and the depersonalisation that can accompany impossible standards of beauty.

Originally sculpted in clay and cast in resin, the work was transformed by delicate resin webbing that emerged unexpectedly during the casting process. Rather than removing these fragile formations, Marsiglia embraced them as an essential part of the work. As viewers instinctively reached out to touch the sculpture, these elements gradually eroded, reinforcing the work's meditation on vulnerability, perception, and the tension between permanence and change.
