'Rooted' celebrates the many ways we connect - to place, to home, to memory and to the beauty that surrounds us. Inspired by Stanford In Bloom and this year's theme, After the Fire, the exhibition reflects on renewal in its broadest sense: the resilience of nature, the power of creativity and the enduring role of art in enriching our lives.

Yesterday we had the privilege of visiting sculptor Sylvester Zanoxolo Mqeku in studio to hear about his new series of sand cast works and the nuance of his art making.

We have been ruminating on his insightful reflection into his practice and the alchemical relationship between the artist and their materials...

“In the studio the clay, and sand in my practice, receives how you show up.

I have to be intentional about what I input, because clay always remembers; what you did to it at the dry stage, it remembers what you did to it when it was leather hard, the sand works the same way.  

If you didn’t treat it properly while the sand was mixed with water, on the last day when you are finally excavating, you will see lumps appear. The clay is the same, the crack that appears five days later...why do you think it is there?

The internal environment I act from when working with sand and clay will always show, my body is being received by the materials, it’s the alchemy of the both of us.”

This month we caught up with artist Corné Eksteen for a poignant reflection on curiosity, the creative spirit and negotiating personal identity in the midst of tech revolution...

"The influence and presence of technology will never be absent from my work, but the focus is shifting towards the everyday and the personal.

Living in rural Africa in the 21st century, with access to all the trappings of technology and consumerism, yet in a setting where I have access to snowcapped mountains, dams, rivers and wildlife on my doorstep.

That juxtaposition between the technological and natural is starting to take center stage. In many ways the negotiation of self now has a specific location attached to it, where I’m the artist influenced by algorithms, but also concerned with collecting eggs from my chickens, picking fresh lemons and having morning coffee with a pug on my lap while watching horses play in the pen across the street from my studio."

We recently had the privilege of visiting artist Kate Schärf in her sun dappled studio in Cape Town. We spoke about finding inspiration in the natural world, the power of fantasy and a little about her journey to being a full time painter:

"Painting to me is freedom of expression, I paint because it brings me joy.
I fell in love with painting during lockdown when I really started to get into oil paints. I used to paint with acrylic at school however I completely fell in love with the process and nuance of painting with oil paints."
