A VERY IMPORTANT BEAR TURNS 100! Ი︵𐑼

A century ago, on 14 October 1926, a bear of very little brain, a heart of gold, a penchant for "a little something" around eleven o'clock, and a rather large appetite for honey first wandered into children's literature. 🍯

Written by A.A. Milne and illustrated by E.H. Shepard, the Hundred Acre Wood has invited us to share countless adventures with Winnie-the-Pooh and hus friends.

♡ We’ve fallen in love with Piglet, watched Tigger bounce into the story, worried along with Rabbit, smiled at Eeyore's wonderfully gloomy observations, questioned Owl’s wisdom, and marvelled at how Christopher Robin could turn an ordinary day into something quite extraordinary.

A hundred years later, Pooh Bear is still reminding us that some of life's finest adventures begin by taking the long way round and that the best things in life are often the simplest: a friend to walk beside, a little something to eat, time to daydream, and a place where you belong.

Here's to 100 years of Pooh, Piglet and all their delightful friends. 💯

Why wait until Sunday?
𖡼.𖤣𖥧𖡼.𖤣𖥧 On Saturday, 17 October, we’re heading into the Cape Victorian garden at La Rochelle for a Silent Reading Event: an afternoon of books, sunshine, and the simple pleasure of reading in a beautiful setting.

Bring the book(s) you’re currently reading, a picnic blanket or garden chair, find yourself a shady spot, settle in, and read. No agenda. Just time to read.

After the silent reading hour, feel free to stay for a complimentary cup of tea or coffee and chat about books with fellow readers.

🌸 Flower crowns are optional. 📖 Books are not.

🌸 THE SPRING BOOKSHELF EDIT
A little ‘shelfie’ inspiration for your spring edit.

Spring is the perfect time to give your bookshelves a little attention. And by editing, we mean taking a good look at what’s there and deciding what still deserves a place.

STEP #1 | Take ALL the books off the shelves.
STEP #2 | Sort them into two piles: KEEP or DONATE.

Once you’ve made those decisions, there’s another important question:
How do you like to arrange the books you’re keeping?
📚 By author?
📖 By genre or category?
🌈 By colour?
📏 By size?
↕️ Upright or stacked?
✨ Or a mix of everything?

We started wondering what would happen if we sorted a few of our bookshop shelves by colour.
The result? Rather pretty.

It might not be the most practical system for a bookshop — but at home, a colour-coordinated bookshelf can be a fun way to turn your collection into part of the room’s decor.

AROUND THE LITERARY WORLD 🌍 📚

September is a particularly good month for author birthdays…
Our selection takes us from Russia to Nigeria, England to America — and even a little detour to Middle-earth for HOBBIT DAY on 22 September!

But we couldn’t let this literary journey pass without a special mention of two South African voices born in September: Ingrid Jonker and Breyten Breytenbach.

🇿🇦 Ingrid Jonker — poet, born 19 September 1933 in Kimberley.
🇿🇦 Breyten Breytenbach — poet, writer and activist, born 16 September 1939 in Bonnievale.

Sadly, we couldn’t get our hands on their books to feature them in this carousel post, but their place in our literary landscape is certainly worth celebrating.

The good news? Some of the books featured in our journey are already on our shelves. 📚
