“Named after my niece at her naming ceremony this year. In Bahlakoana clan, a child is welcomed and introduced to the clan through prayer, the slaughtering of a sheep, and the giving of a name. I named her Modiehi, a name that symbolizes abundance, fruition, and the reward that comes after seasons of labor and prayer. This painting became my way of holding that moment - the sacredness of coming of age and belonging.” Selloane Moeti reflects on her work showing at the gallery till 22 August.
Selloane Moeti is a multidisciplinary artist based in KwaZulu-Natal whose practice is rooted in ancestral memory, spirituality, and dreamscape. Moeti’s work explores Black womanhood, sisterhood, healing, and belonging through rituals of prayer, lineage, and kinship. Drawing on her Sotho heritage, she incorporates materials such as red clay, holy ash, and impepho to trace spiritual inheritance and continuity.
