Our Magnificent Lighthouse is bathed in blue tonight to acknowledge World Maritime Day.
World Maritime Day is an official international observance led by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, to highlight the importance of shipping safety, maritime security, and the protection of the marine environment.
Although our McCrae Lighthouse is not operational any more it did serve to guide mariners through the South Channel on the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay for over a 100 years until decommissioned in 1994. Today it serves as a significant landmark on the Peninsula and our McCrae Lions are proud to be able to manage, maintain and illuminate the structure for worthwhile causes of which raises much needed awareness.

SEA-TEMBER BEAUTY WORLD MARITIME DAY

For generations, Queenscliff’s two lighthouses have stood side by side: the Black Lighthouse, or High Light, and the White Lighthouse, or Low Light.

Built from the same rugged basalt, the White Lighthouse has often stood quietly in the shadow of her unpainted sister.

Until SEA-TEMBER.

On Thursday 24th, Friday 25th and Saturday 26th, these maritime icons will be illuminated in blue by Studio All, revealing a beauty that has been waiting generations to be seen.

Her stonework will glow.
Her shadows will deepen.
Her silhouette will rise against the night sky.

Be part of this special moment and see these maritime beauties for yourself.

Perhaps she has always been beautiful.

Perhaps we simply needed to see her in a different light.

Book your lighthouse experience and learn more about the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse. Special night tours are available, with limited vacancies.

Looking for something different to do this Grand Final long-weekend?

Why not get on board with Queenscliffe Maritime Museum's Sea-tember and visit the Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff lighthouses as they’re bathed in blue light to mark .

Both lighthouses will be lit with blue light, creating a spectacular maritime beacon across the entrance of Port Phillip Heads. The lights will be on from 6.45 pm.

The celebrations are all part of the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum’s Sea-tember event. Lighting the lighthouses has been made possible through the work of Liam Petrie Allbutt, a light architect and community member with a long family connection to the Point Lonsdale lighthouse.

Did you know? 💡

Lighthouse lens testing was carried out at Spon Lane for over 100 years, making it one of the only inland lighthouse-testing locations in the UK.
It’s another fascinating part of the history of Chance Brothers and the remarkable work that took place here in Smethwick.
