On the right hangs a lithograph by Banele Khoza. You see a bunch of flowers in a vase on a table. The purple flowers appear rather seductive against the green shades of the stems and leaves. You notice the card that says Love Is On The Way and it leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling.

But then the bananas begin to bother you. They don’t look so fresh anymore. And you notice the petals on the table that had fallen off the flowers; this person has been waiting for love for a long time.

This is when you realise that the artist didn’t merely create a pretty still life with flowers, but had thought long and hard about his message; for something to happen, you have to be proactive.

Looking on from the left is a 7-colour silkscreen print by Lehlogonolo Mashaba from his highly successful Markings Of Belonging series from 2013, finished in hues of blue and pink.

Top right we see a monotype lithograph by Katlego Tlabela. This work illustrates two important aspects of a successful artwork. The first is depth, which the artist achieves through the use of line. The paper is a flat two-dimensional plane, but through the use of angular lines, the third dimension is achieved.

The second aspect is the title, Black Owned Property. Regardless your impression upon seeing the work, learning the title suddenly shifts the interpretation to take on a new meaning.

Bottom left hangs Mary Sibande’s character, Sophie. Does she live in that grand modern house? Does she dream of owning that house? Or does she perhaps work in that house? If it is the latter, why is she still wearing a very colonial outfit?
