We are pleased to share that the works of Senzeni Marasela, Kimathi Mafafo and Plácido ‘Pocho’ Guimarães, alongside those of Abdesslem Ayed and Nwabisa Ntlokwana, will be featured in ‘Matereality V2’ at the Iziko South African National Gallery.

Curated by Andrea Lewis, the exhibition brings together artists whose practices position material not simply as a medium, but as the very substance through which meaning is produced. Moving beyond conventional approaches to painting and sculpture, ‘Matereality V2’ foregrounds works that engage with unexpected, historically resonant and conceptually charged materials, each carrying its own processes, narratives and significance.

As winter settles over the Southern Hemisphere, EBONY/CURATED presents the inaugural edition of
‘A Very Loop Street Winter’, a seasonal group exhibition bringing together works by an exceptional selection of established and emerging contemporary artists. Responding to the reflective pace of the season, the exhibition presents a considered dialogue between diverse artistic practices. Together, these works offer a compelling survey of contemporary voices that continue to shape both local and international conversations. We are delighted to announce that ‘Ntshalintshali’ has been extended for two weeks and gives the viewer an opportunity to experience an exhibition honouring the enduring artistic legacy of Bonnie Ntshalintshali and her extraordinary creative lineage.
 
Bringing together significant new masterworks presented for the first time, the exhibition unites the work of her son, Senzo Ntshalintshali, and her nephews, Somandla Ntshalintshali and Slulamile Mlambo. Across a rich selection of ceramic sculptures and distinct artistic approaches, ‘Ntshalintshali’ traces the continuity of knowledge, craftsmanship, community and familial connection that Bonnie set in motion, and which continues, through successive generations, to shape Ardmore’s artistic practice today.
 
We invite you to visit ‘Ntshalintshali’ at our Bordeaux House Gallery in Franschhoek before the exhibition closes on the 16th August.

Join us this today as we unveil ‘Ntshalintshali’, a group exhibition presented by Ardmore and EBONY/CURATED celebrating the extraordinary artistic legacy of the late Bonnie Ntshalintshali.

Bringing together ceramic sculptures by Senzo Ntshalintshali, Somandla Ntshalintshali, and Slulamile Mlambo, the exhibition honours the creative lineage Bonnie established through her pioneering role at Ardmore. Across three distinct sculptural practices, the works celebrate the enduring power of mentorship, family, and the transmission of artistic knowledge across generations, while reflecting the distinctive visual language that has come to define Ardmore over the past forty years.

Senzo Ntshalintshali is the only son of Bonnie Ntshalintshali. Raised by his grandmother, Janet, after his mother’s premature death, he modelled small clay cows as a child without yet knowing it would lead him back to her legacy. Today, as a sculptor at Ardmore, he sees his work as a continuation of Bonnie’s creative spirit.

Senzo’s figures return to childhood, exploring the sense of security and loss. A suitcase, an umbrella, a protective animal companion. Mentored by Somandla and Christopher Ntshalintshali and master sculptor Bennet Zondo, he is best known for his lyrical Riders Series: children astride wild dogs, leopards, and pangolins, painted in collaboration with Ardmore’s studio artists using quiet, personal narratives dressed in decorative richness.

Celebrating the enduring legacy of Bonnie Ntshalintshali and 40 years of Ardmore’s pioneering contribution to South African ceramics, ‘Ntshalintshali’ brings together new works by Senzo and Somandla Ntshalintshali alongside Slu’s striking sculptures, celebrating a creative lineage that continues to evolve today. Slulamile Mlambo grew up in Estcourt, where his fascination with sculpture began on the riverbanks near his home, moulding animals from clay. His artistic journey was profoundly influenced by his grandfather, Gweni Ntshalintshali, and the late Bonnie Ntshalintshali, whose mentorship encouraged the family’s younger generation to explore sculpture.

Slu joined Ardmore in 2006, returning in late 2021, and has since become recognised as one of the studio’s pioneering abstract sculptors. Since 2020 he has returned to the pangolin, distorted, exaggerated, defiant, as a way of holding vulnerability and resilience together.

Celebrated for his portrayals of everyday life, Peter Clarke (1929–2014) stands as one of South Africa’s most significant artists, poets, and writers.

Across a career spanning more than six decades, Clarke produced paintings, drawings, and prints that documented the resilience, customs, and social realities of South Africa’s marginalised communities with remarkable humanity and quiet conviction.

Ardmore and EBONY/CURATED are delighted to present ‘Ntshalintshali’, open from 11:30am at Bordeuax House on Saturday 4 July 2026. As a collective, Ardmore has achieved considerable attention both internationally and locally. Celebrating 40 years in 2025, Ardmore’s founder, Fée Halsted credits the late Bonnie Ntshalintshali with making the collective the success it is today.

‘Ntshalintshali’ celebrates Bonnie Ntshalintshali’s artistic legacy and the remarkable creative lineage she established, drawn together through the work of her son, Senzo Ntshalintshali, and her nephews, Somandla Ntshalintshali and Slulamile Mlambo.

Across diverse ceramic sculptures, the exhibition traces the continuity of knowledge, practice, and familial bond that Bonnie set in motion, and which continues, in different hands and different forms, to define Ardmore’s art today.
