INTRODUCING MICHELLE SANK.

We’re delighted to introduce the work of award-winning photographer Michelle Sank.

Born in Cape Town and now based in the UK, Michelle is internationally recognised for her compelling portraits that explore identity, belonging, youth and the relationship between people and their environments.

Her photographs often focus on individuals at moments of transition, capturing something deeply personal while reflecting broader social and cultural experiences.

In 2024, Michelle received recognition at the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards, further establishing her place in contemporary photography.

A great turnout for the launch of The Print Table | Volume 01 at Gallery F.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the evening, spent time with the work, met the photographers and helped make the first Volume such a success.

It was great to see the gallery so full, with so many people engaging with photography and the prints on the table.

A big congratulations to all the photographers involved in bringing Volume 01 together.

DALE YUDELMAN | CHRISTMAS PARADE

Dale Yudelman with a framed print of Christmas Parade, photographed in downtown Johannesburg in the 1980s, from his series Suburbs in Paradise.

It’s such a great moment. A young boy has lowered himself right down onto the pavement just to get a view of the parade through the legs of the adults standing in front of him.

There’s something so simple about the photograph, but the longer you look at it, the more you start to notice.
The adults form this almost complete barrier across the frame, while the boy has simply found another way to see what’s happening.

It’s one of those everyday moments that Dale has always been so good at noticing and photographing.

KALK BAY | Jillian Edelstein

In the 19th century, Kalk Bay’s fishing community grew from emancipated slaves whose origins included Batavia, Java and Malaysia. Fishing became central to the life and identity of the village.

During apartheid, Kalk Bay found itself in a unique position. While the Group Areas Act displaced communities across South Africa, the realities of fishing meant that fishermen needed to reach the harbour as early as 4am. With no transport infrastructure to bring them in from the townships at that hour, the community remained.

It became a rare pocket of coexistence within the apartheid system.

Jillian Edelstein began photographing Kalk Bay while living in the community, regularly visiting the harbour and documenting the fishermen, their families, the rituals around trawling, netting and fishing, and the characters who shaped everyday life around the harbour.

The resulting series is both a record of a fishing community and an intimate portrait of a particular moment in Kalk Bay’s history.

Day one was a great success.
We had a blast engaging with the work and, even more importantly, with so many collectors, photographers, friends and new faces throughout the day.

It was great to see the conversations that opened up around the photographs on our walls, from the archival works through to the contemporary voices we’re presenting at the fair.

We’re back at FNB Art Joburg today till Sunday.

Jürgen Schadeberg, Picnic at Eton College, England, 1981.

In 1964, Schadeberg left South Africa for London.

Over the next two decades he worked as a freelance photojournalist across Europe and America, contributing to a number of major magazines while also teaching in New York, London and Hamburg.

Before returning to South Africa in 1985, he had lived in London, Spain, New York and France. The photographs from these years are a very different part of his archive, moving between social documentary work and more modernist, abstract images.

It’s an interesting photograph to look at alongside his wider work because it shows how broad his eye was. Different country, different social setting, but the same attention to people and the small details around them.

1981 was also the year Schadeberg had a solo exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery in London and published the book Jürgen Schadeberg.

Photographed in Hillbrow in 2003, a man pauses in prayer with a Bible in his hand while Ponte City rises behind him.

By the early 2000s, Hillbrow had undergone enormous social change and had become one of Johannesburg’s most complex inner-city neighbourhoods. Crocquet’s photograph avoids the spectacle usually associated with the area and instead focuses on a private moment of faith within the city.

This particular print is edition 6/10, signed and inscribed in pencil on the reverse and stamped with the Pierre Crocquet Estate embossed stamp on the recto.
