Jürgen Schadeberg, Picnic at Eton College, England, 1981.

In 1964, Schadeberg left South Africa for London.

Over the next two decades he worked as a freelance photojournalist across Europe and America, contributing to a number of major magazines while also teaching in New York, London and Hamburg.

Before returning to South Africa in 1985, he had lived in London, Spain, New York and France. The photographs from these years are a very different part of his archive, moving between social documentary work and more modernist, abstract images.

It’s an interesting photograph to look at alongside his wider work because it shows how broad his eye was. Different country, different social setting, but the same attention to people and the small details around them.

1981 was also the year Schadeberg had a solo exhibition at The Photographers’ Gallery in London and published the book Jürgen Schadeberg.

Photographed in Hillbrow in 2003, a man pauses in prayer with a Bible in his hand while Ponte City rises behind him.

By the early 2000s, Hillbrow had undergone enormous social change and had become one of Johannesburg’s most complex inner-city neighbourhoods. Crocquet’s photograph avoids the spectacle usually associated with the area and instead focuses on a private moment of faith within the city.

This particular print is edition 6/10, signed and inscribed in pencil on the reverse and stamped with the Pierre Crocquet Estate embossed stamp on the recto.

“Our railroad is coming to the end of the line...”
Ken Gerhardt’s Off the Rails is an ongoing photographic study of the railway line that traces Cape Town’s False Bay coastline.

Gerhardt began photographing the line in 2015, drawn to a route he knows intimately and to the possibility that this familiar part of the Southern Peninsula may one day disappear. Rather than simply documenting the railway, he looks closely at the structures, landscapes and small details that have become part of its character.

In this photograph, a boat sits in front of a weathered boathouse beside the railway, one of the many quiet scenes Gerhardt has encountered while following the line along the coast.

The series is produced as traditional black-and-white silver gelatin handprints. Each print is individually made by the photographer, signed, numbered and embossed, in limited editions of five.

Did you know this famous photograph was taken by a South African photographer?

Barry Lategan was born in South Africa and went on to become one of the defining fashion and portrait photographers working in Britain during the 1960s.

In 1966, he photographed a young Twiggy, then still Lesley Hornby. The photographs became closely associated with the look of the decade and with the beginning of her extraordinary career.

It is a fascinating South African connection within one of the most recognisable chapters of 1960s fashion photography.

A photograph that feels like a scene from a story already in motion, and an absolute favourite of mine!

Frank Herholdt’s ‘The Brooks Fox Hunt, 2015’ carries the atmosphere of a cinematic still. The moment is carefully composed, leaving the rest to our imagination.

Chatting to Frank about it, he recalls that it was particularly difficult to create this image having so many components, especially having the fox and the hounds in close proximity…

How did Gavin Furlonger first meet South African documentary photographer Juhan Kuus?

Sharon from City Views visited Gallery F in Cape Town to interview us about Gallery F, PAPA-SA and our work preserving South African photographic archives.

A difficult reality of South Africa, recorded by Juhan Kuus.

Taken at a youth detention centre in South Africa in 2001, these photographs show two boys held inside the facility.

Juhan spent much of his career photographing the parts of this country that many people did not see or chose not to look at. His photographs created a direct and often uncomfortable record of South Africa.

Whats crazy to me, is how young these boys are. Before anything else, they were children.

Images like these ask us to face the parts of our society that are easy to ignore. They also remind us why photographic archives need to be preserved, researched and shared.

Juhan Kuus left behind an extraordinary record of South Africa and there is still so much within his archive that deserves to be seen.
