30 teachers from 17 schools from Metro Central, South and East attended the STEM Clubs Networkโ€™s ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜›๐˜ฐ ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ด teacher training at the Cape Town Science Centre on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.

The programme offered an introduction to what participants can expect throughout the STEM Club journey and highlighted the importance of STEM education and the play-to-learn approach of the CTSC, where curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning are at the centre of every experience. Teachers were encouraged to remember that STEM Clubs are designed to be inclusive and accessible to all learners - not only those who are academically inclined - creating opportunities for every child to explore, discover, and grow.

The afternoon programme also included hands-on workshops focusing on Acids and Bases, where participants experimented with indicators and enjoyed launching rocket poppers while exploring scientific concepts in a fun and interactive way. The session concluded with teachers receiving their STEM Club Starter Kits, equipping them for the exciting journey ahead.

Special thanks to our valued partners from Nature Connect and their Sustainable Schools Hub, who shared valuable insights into the support and opportunities they provide to schools. And thank you to all the teachers who joined us for the ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜›๐˜ฐ ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ด training - we wish you and your learners all the best for establishment of a STEM Club in your school.

Feedback sent to Amicia Canterbury, Project Manager of the STEM Clubs Network, from an educator at Dysseldorp Secondary School in Eden & Central Karoo, who has an active STEM Club:

โ€œWe are growing. We are Thriving โคโคโค Thank you Amicia for the confidence you have in us to promote Science within the Western Cape Education sector. You and your team are truly inspiring โคโคโค "

Launched as part of the CTSCโ€™s 25th birthday celebrations last year, The Innovation Studio is a dynamic space designed to equip learners, educators, and the public with critical digital skills for the 4th Industrial Revolution. With hands-on coding and robotics experiences, AI demonstrations, and interactive exhibits, it fosters creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in an engaging, future-focused environment.

Speaking to the launch of this new classroom, Sasol Foundation STEM specialist, Mpolai Koloko said, โ€œAt Sasol Foundation, we believe that education is the cornerstone of progress. By partnering with the Cape Town Science Centre, we are creating opportunities for learners to engage with technologies that will define the future. The Innovation Studio is more than a physical space, it is a catalyst for curiosity, creativity, and confidence in STEM. Together, we are building pathways for young people to participate meaningfully in the 4th Industrial Revolution.โ€

If you havenโ€™t yet explored this exciting new addition to our exhibition floor, hereโ€™s whatโ€™s on offer at The Innovation Studio tomorrow:

** Science Out Loud (SOL) Talk: WHY ARE THERE BASOTHO HERITAGE BLANKETS IN THE INNOVATION STUDIO?
(11:30 | age 8+ | max 30 ppl | Innovation Studio)

Come to an interactive talk that will thread together a story of how computational methods applied to the making of blankets 200 years ago. Like coding or robotics, these designs use repeating patterns and structure. Small elements combine to create something complex and meaningful. Just as these blankets
weave stories from threads, coding and robotics weave solutions from logic and creativity.

** Demo: BOTLEY ROBOTICS
(14:30 | age 5 - 7 | max 20 ppl | Innovation Studio)

Step into a hands-on robotics arena where kids use Botley to complete exciting coding challenges from simple tasks to tricky treasure-hunt quests. Ideal for growing coders who love to think, test, and tinker.

๐Ÿ“ธ: Liebenberg Primary School learners were the first to visit The Innovation Studio at the Cape Town Science Centreโ€™s 25th Big Birthday Bash.

Come experience how this space is helping to shape the next generation of innovators.

Join us at the Cape Town Science Centre for the second Saturday of our Young Engineers Lab weekend programme.

Step into the exciting world of engineering, where creativity meets innovation. In this dynamic, hands-on weekend programme, young minds are challenged to design, build, test, and improve real-world solutions using simple materials and powerful ideas. From constructing sturdy structures and wind-powered vehicles to explore, participants discover how science and mathematics come together to make musical instruments in the world around us.

Highlights for

* WORKSHOP (11:00 & 14:00) - Hoop glider

Soar into the science of flight with our exciting workshop, in this hands-on activity, young learners design and build their own lightweight glider using simple materials such as straws and paper hoops.
Ages: 5+ | Cost: R5 | Capacity per workshop: 32 people

* SCIENCE SHOW (13:00)

* DEMONSTRATION (13:30) - Marcel cups tower challenge

Let's build higher, stronger, and smarter. In the Marble Cups Tower Challenge, participants use cups to construct the tallest and most stable tower possible. With limited materials and a ticking clock, learners must think strategically about balance, base support, and weight distribution to prevent their structure from toppling.
Suitable for all ages | Cost: Free
