Build a house in the exclusive 'kids only' Concor Building Site, challenge your mind with Puzzling Things, experience weightlessness similar to that of space with a spin on the Human Gyroscope, explore Space with the AstroTrek Virtual Reality Exhibition & Light Room and see and hear science in the Audio Kinetic Sculpture. Enjoy a game of Chess on the Giant Chess set. We offer free internet to all

our visitors. Remember to take a breather and enjoy refreshments from the iCafe. We are a work in progress and currently undergoing a refurbishment! While we are able to offer our visitor the great experiences they have become accustomed to, we will continue to add new and exciting elements to our offering. We are striving to find the support to grow this centre into everything you would expect from a world class science centre and more. We value your visits and encourage your support.

Highlight – Visiting exhibition for Women’s Month:

The exhibition ‘Oceánicas: Female Pioneers in Ocean Science’ tells the life and work of 20 illustrious female marine scientists, some of them forgotten by history. From the first and only woman to sail around the world during the time of the great explorations, to women who today lead the fight for ocean conservation.

Their stories tell us about the development of marine science over the last few centuries, but also of the difficulties they have faced for being women – in oceanography, in science, in life – and of the fight for equality of many generations.

This exhibition is part of the dissemination project ‘Oceánicas: women pioneers in oceanography’, developed by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC) with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology – Ministry of Science and Innovation.

𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗮 is an annual programme of talks and events that focus on the local food system. The 2026 programme has been on since 20 July and runs until 2 August. The theme for this year is ‘Water and the food system’.

𝗛𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻: 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗟𝗮𝗯 at the Cape Town Science Centre

Water doesn’t always come from a tap. In this hands-on workshop, kids aged 6 to 12 will discover where water really hides – in desert plants, underground bulbs, coastal fogs, and the ancient knowledge of the KhoeKhoe people, who could read a dry landscape and find water where others saw none. Part science experiment, part kitchen adventure, the Water Lab turns that knowledge into something you can taste. Kids will explore, cook, and eat their way through one of the most important questions of our time: where does water come from, and how do we find it when it disappears? Curious, hands-on, and genuinely delicious.

What’s on at the Cape Town Science Centre this winter?

Mix, fizz, bubble, and experiment your way through our Kitchen Chemistry Holiday Programme! Kids can enjoy exciting kitchen-based experiments while learning about reactions, mixtures, acids, bases, and more through fun, hands-on activities designed especially for young explorers.

The Cape Town Science Centre will be running a 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼:𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 holiday club, for tweens and teenagers during the upcoming school holidays.

Using the BBC Micro and Microsoft MakeCode, participants will learn how to create interactive programs, animations, games, smart devices and coding challenges while developing problem-solving and computational thinking skills.

Date: 30 June – 2 July 2026 (3 days)
Ages: 11 – 17 years
Time: 10:00 – 13:00
Capacity: 20 participants

Through interactive experiments and creative builds, kids will explore how marine life thrives, how boats float, and how coastal structures protect our shores.

From jellyfish in a bottle to boat design challenges, each workshop blends hands-on fun with scientific discovery, showing how simple materials can unlock the secrets of the deep. It’s a playful, immersive adventure that combines curiosity, creativity, and ocean science perfect for young explorers eager to discover the world beneath the waves.

30 teachers from 17 schools from Metro Central, South and East attended the STEM Clubs Network’s 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘛𝘰 𝘉𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘴 teacher training at the Cape Town Science Centre on Tuesday, 19 May 2026.

The programme offered an introduction to what participants can expect throughout the STEM Club journey and highlighted the importance of STEM education and the play-to-learn approach of the CTSC, where curiosity, creativity, and hands-on learning are at the centre of every experience. Teachers were encouraged to remember that STEM Clubs are designed to be inclusive and accessible to all learners - not only those who are academically inclined - creating opportunities for every child to explore, discover, and grow.

The afternoon programme also included hands-on workshops focusing on Acids and Bases, where participants experimented with indicators and enjoyed launching rocket poppers while exploring scientific concepts in a fun and interactive way. The session concluded with teachers receiving their STEM Club Starter Kits, equipping them for the exciting journey ahead.

Special thanks to our valued partners from Nature Connect and their Sustainable Schools Hub, who shared valuable insights into the support and opportunities they provide to schools. And thank you to all the teachers who joined us for the 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘛𝘰 𝘉𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘴 training - we wish you and your learners all the best for establishment of a STEM Club in your school.

Due to the severe weather conditions and storm warnings issued for the Western Cape, the Cape Town Science Centre will be closed to the public on 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟭𝟮 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, in the interest of visitor and staff safety.

The CTSC will reopen to the public and school groups on Wednesday, 13 May 2026.

We encourage everyone to remain safe and exercise caution while the severe weather conditions persist.
