The Arts Association of Bellville (art.b), is a dynamic and innovative, community-orientated organisation primarily managed by volunteers and partially supported by The City of Cape Town. art.b Gallery, also known as The Arts Association of Bellville, is a NPO: Non Profit Organization, and a branch of SANAVA (South African Association of Visual Arts). The Arts Association of Bellville was founded

on 27 August 1957. 45 people attended the first meeting, where the Constitution was accepted. 8 members were elected, with Mr. During the first decade the Association held numerous fund raising events, involving the public as well as the municipality of Bellville. Honniball, and their works were exhibited in the foyer of the Municipality library in Kruskal Street, Bellville. In 1989 the prestigious Bellville Art Gallery and Art Centre were established in the present library Centre, initiated by the late Mr Burgert Naude. Curator and assistant posts were created by the City Council of Bellville, serving the needs of the public. Marilyn Martin, then Director of Iziko Museum, opened a prestigious Gala Art Exhibition at the gallery featuring works of amongst others, William Kentridge, Conrad Theys and Frans Claerhout. The annual VULEKA ART COMPETITION was established by this gallery in 1963 – drawing entries from now prominent artists such as William Kentridge (Winner 1980), Sue Williamson, Christo Coetzee, Pippa Skotnes and Andries Gouws. Renowned artist Conrad Theys has sponsored VULEKA for many years, and the first prize is now known as the Conrad Theys prize. The Gallery consists of the Main Gallery and the Vestibule. The combined exhibition space is approximately 420 square meters, with excellent natural and electrical light. The Art Centre provides for various art disciplines, including pottery, drawing, painting, photography and life drawing classes. It also caters for disadvantaged and disabled learners. For almost 60 years, the gallery and art centre have served as a hub of cultural and community activities, offering art exhibitions of high standing such as the Absa L’Atelier, workshops, art classes and music concerts.

COMING SOON TO ART.b: "BRUSHSTROKES OF Memory"

We’re especially excited to share our next exhibition with you...

One of our lovely Art.b Committee members, Marietjie du Toit, will present her solo exhibition, Brushstrokes of Memory, opening at Art.b Gallery on Saturday, 12 September 2026.

Featuring 80 oil paintings, the exhibition brings together a lifetime of painting, observation and memory.

Marietjie’s work is beautifully nostalgic, filled with people, places and fleeting moments that feel wonderfully familiar.

We’ve been lucky enough to catch a few behind-the-scenes glimpses of what is coming... and trust us, this exhibition is going to be something very special!

We’re proud to share that this year Marietjie had *not one, but TWO paintings selected as finalists in the Vuleka 2026 exhibition!

As Marietjie says:
“Inspired by the beauty of creation, each painting holds a moment, a feeling, a memory, a little piece of my journey. But I believe art becomes truly alive when it touches someone else’s heart.”

Come and wander through a lifetime of stories told in paint. Pause. Look closely. Perhaps somewhere among those brushstrokes, you’ll find a memory of your own. 💙

Vuleka 2026 Young Artist Award Feature: Kayla Molenaar.

Congratulations to Kayla Molenaar, one of two recipients of the Young Artist Award in the Vuleka 2026 Art Competition for her oil painting, The Dreamer.

Kayla has been drawing digitally since childhood, but was recently inspired by her parents to explore traditional mediums. They also encouraged her to enter Vuleka, making her selection as a finalist, and then as an award recipient, a beautiful and unexpected moment.

The Dreamer began as a small seed of an idea and has grown into a work that can now be seen, shared and enjoyed by many. The painting has also found a new home, and we are delighted to note that the work is sold.

Vuleka 2026 Winner Feature: Danielle Vorster

Congratulations to Danielle Vorster, recognised as a Highly Recommended Artist in the Vuleka 2026 Art Competition for her work Textured & Untitled.

In this intricate and powerful piece, Danielle explores how a system can hold together even as it begins to lose its order. Working with only red ink and black thread, she allows structure, repetition and unraveling to exist side by side.

Parts of the work seem to fall away, while other areas remain dense, layered and intact. What emerges is not a neat resolution, but something partial, persistent and quietly compelling, still holding its shape even where it has started to come apart.

Danielle shared that this recognition came as a pleasant surprise, especially because the work stayed close to the way she naturally works: building through repetition rather than following a fixed plan.

Vuleka 2026 Winner Feature: Maureen Visagé

Congratulations to Maureen Visagé, awarded Third Prize in the Vuleka 2026 Art Competition for her bronze sculpture, Little Diver.

Celebrating the joy and innocence of childhood, Little Diver is the third in a series of life-size bronze figures, following Little Dancer, Come Play with Us and Little Dreamer.

Feisty and full of bravado, the figure stands tall in a sunlit moment, capturing the confidence, freedom and fragility of childhood. The work recalls carefree summer holidays filled with swimming, laughter, shouting and splashing around the pool and in the waves.

There is something wonderfully fleeting in this sculpture: those bright, bubblegum-like moments that feel endless when we are young, yet pass all too quickly.
