The Craft Witch by Kate Bettesworth, explores the historical and contemporary scrutiny of women through the male gaze, drawing on witch trials, fairy tales and Christian symbolism to challenge patriarchal ideas surrounding the witch.

Through craft techniques, digital comic-style storytelling, humour and satire, the work reimagines the witch as a feminist and spiritual figure. It explores craft and artmaking as forms of magic, inviting viewers to reconsider their relationship with the mystical, spiritual and creative, while questioning the symbols and stories that have shaped our understanding of the witch.

“My creative process can be divided into three parts. It starts with lots of research, writing and conceptual brainstorming, followed by visual explorations through sketches and collage. Finally, I experiment with different ways of bringing these elements together.”

Meet Anri Du Plessis, whose work The Nature of Attention invites us to slow down and look beyond what is immediately visible.

Drawing from South African flora found across the Western Cape, Soutpansberg and Mopaneveld, Anri’s oil paintings explore resilience, healing, loss and life’s changing seasons. Her process is just as connected to nature, with canvases stained using locally sourced rooibos, hibiscus and black tea before layers of oil paint are added.

“I hope my work gives people the room to reflect on their own journeys.”

🏳️‍🌈 OPEN CALL | NO STRAIGHT LINES

Art.b is pleased to invite artists to submit work for No Straight Lines, a group exhibition presented as part of Cape Town Pride 2027.

Opening our 2027 programme to a broad conversation around identity, belonging, love, self-expression and lived experience, the exhibition will bring together a diverse range of artistic voices and perspectives.

We welcome submissions from LGBTQI+ artists and allies, working across all mediums and disciplines. Artists are invited to submit between 2 and 4 works for consideration.

A little reminder to visit Brushstrokes of Memory.

Marietjie du Toit’s (Marietjie du Toit) beautiful solo exhibition is still on at Art.b Gallery until 10 October, and it is genuinely worth making time for.

With 80 beautiful oil paintings on show, the exhibition is filled with warmth, nostalgia, familiar faces and beautifully observed moments. It is the kind of exhibition that invites you to slow down, wander, look closely and discover the stories hidden in the brushstrokes.

A lifetime of painting, a story told in colour. Artist, Marietjie du Toit, who today works from her home studio in Bellville, Cape Town, is honoured to share almost 80 oil paintings in her solo exhibition, Brushstrokes of Memory.

“Inspired by the beauty of creation, each painting holds a moment, a feeling, a memory — a little piece of my journey. But I believe art becomes truly alive when it touches someone else’s heart.”
