Trained in the decorative arts in Nice and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Louis Cane regarded furniture as an artistic equal to that of painting or sculpture. ⁣
⁣
Cane created for his own spaces, particularly his house in Beaulieu-sur-Mer and then Villefranche-sur-Mer, starting in the early 1990s. He conceived not only furniture, but an entire environment. Furniture was not an addition; it belonged to a coherent whole. His pieces often arose from a particular need and a desire for timelessness: to conceive pieces of furniture that, once installed, give the impression of always having been there. ⁣
⁣
What started as a personal project quickly became an essential part of his artistic practice; he enjoyed the process immensely. Naturally, he continued to design one piece at a time, furniture, objects and lighting; the unique and limited editions now in view at RALPH PUCCI New York.⁣

For Louis Cane, furniture was never merely a matter of function or design. His creations are not the result of mere technical ex*****on; they are living works shaped by time, intuition, human hands and the subtle imperfections that give them life. ⁣
⁣
Cane was especially interested in Coromandel lacquer, the eighteenth-century Chinese screens that are split so both sides can be used on furniture, utilizing traditional French craftsmanship. ⁣
⁣
In contrast, at times he would abandon tradition altogether and paint directly onto bronze, treating the material not as a precious object to be revered, but as another surface for artistic freedom and experimentation as exemplified by the Parrot Floor Lamp. ⁣

Very early on, Louis Cane understood that preserving the artistic integrity of his creations required complete control over their production. Rather than outsourcing their fabrication, he gradually assembled a team of highly skilled craftsmen around him, building his own workshops dedicated to cabinetmaking, marquetry and bronze casting. Every stage of production was carried out by hand, under his direct supervision.⁣
⁣
The atelier was also home to one of the artist’s most distinctive signatures: its patinas. Developed and applied in-house, they bring depth, texture and character to the bronze surfaces. Yet Louis Cane was never bound by convention. At times, he would abandon patina altogether and paint directly onto bronze, treating the material not as a precious object to be revered, but as another surface for artistic freedom and experimentation.⁣

Louis Cane created for his own spaces, particularly his house in Beaulieu-sur-Mer and then Villefranche-sur-Mer, starting in the early 1990s. He conceived not only furniture, but an entire environment: volumes, floors, proportions, circulation. Furniture was not an addition; it belonged to a coherent whole. His pieces often arose from a particular need and a desire for timelessness: to conceive pieces of furniture that, once installed, give the impression of always having been there. ⁣

Presenting Louis Cane. Painter, Sculptor, Designer, Rebel. ⁣
⁣
An elusive and resolutely independent French artist, Cane (1943-2024) spent more than fifty years developing a body of work that resists categorization. He never established hierarchies between practices. He allowed himself to paint directly on bronze, to revisit the old masters with wit, to bring the sacred into dialogue with the everyday, and art history with the objects of life. He loved surface as a painter loves canvas, and brought ancient and contemporary materials into dialogue: lacquer and resin, old and new.⁣

An intimate reception to welcome the collection of Louis Cane alongside his daughter Florence Cane. ⁣The evening also featured a special performance by cellist Rubin Kodheli and guitarist Miles Johnston.⁣

We are thrilled to unveil an exhibition of Cane’s (1943-2024) limited editions of furniture, lighting and decorative objects in New York. He was an elusive and resolutely independent French artist who spent more than fifty years developing a body of work that resists categorization.⁣⁣

Cane gradually assembled a team of highly skilled craftsmen around him, building his own workshops dedicated to cabinetmaking, marquetry and bronze casting. Guided by his modern vision and uncompromising standards, these same workshops continue to operate today under the direction of his daughter. Within them, these final pieces conceived during Louis Cane’s lifetime are still produced, by the very artisans who worked alongside him for decades. ⁣⁣
