Famous & Unknown from Xenia:

Whitelaw Reid (1837–1912) was an influential American journalist, diplomat, and politician who shaped late 19th-century public opinion and foreign policy. Born right outside Xenia, Ohio, he rose from a Civil War field correspondent to become the powerful editor-in-chief of the New York Tribune. He went on to serve as the 1892 Republican vice-presidential nominee alongside Benjamin Harrison and was later appointed U.S.

Ambassador to both France and Great Britain.
*Journalism Career Civil War Reporting: Gained national prominence writing for the Cincinnati Gazette.New York Tribune: *Hired by Horace Greeley in 1868 and assumed complete editorial control of the paper following Greeley's death in 1872.
*Literary Platform: Transformed the newspaper into a literary hub, publishing works by icons like Mark Twain and Bret Harte.

Political & Diplomatic:
* Legacy Vice Presidential Bid: Ran as the Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States in the election of 1892, though the Harrison-Reid ticket lost to Grover Cleveland.
*Ambassadorships: Appointed U.S. Minister to France (1889–1892) and later served as Ambassador to the United Kingdom (1905–1912) until his death in London.
*Peace Commission: Served as a key member of the 1898 Paris Peace Commission, where he strongly advocated for the U.S. retention of the Philippines following the Spanish-American War.
