Shawnee Park was established in 1925 when Patrick H. Flynn, a shoe manufacturer from Xenia, donated 10 acres of land to the Xenia Recreation Association in memory of his late wife, Elizabeth Trebein Flynn, under the stipulation that the land could only be used as a park. In 1928, after raising over $6,000 of the approximately $8,000 required, the cornerstone for the pavilion was laid.

Nearly 50 years later, in April 1974, a devastating tornado struck Xenia, causing extensive damage to both the park and pavilion. Recognizing the park’s importance to the community, many residents advocated for its restoration. Thanks to federal and state funding, along with support from local businesses and the Greene County Department of Recreation and Parks, Shawnee Park underwent a comprehensive renovation, with the pavilion remaining its focal point. The renovation also included expanding the lagoon and increasing picnic and recreational areas.

Next year marks an incredible milestone as Shawnee Park turns 100 years old!

The iconic Greene County courthouse may be used as a museum and archive in the next 10 years, as part of Greene County’s long-term plans to consolidate its operations from three campuses to two.
