Did you ✍️ one of our building shingles?

Over the summer we invited visitors to the museum, people who attended a program, and others we saw while we were out and about in the community to sign one of the 27,000 aluminum shingles about to be installed on the roof of our new building 🫶

Hundreds of people left their name or the name of a family member, drew a picture, or penned a message about their love of WCMA. Fred and Jo, members of our security and visitor services team, are holding the last one that was signed; scroll through these pictures and see if you can find your name 🤗

These 21 signed shingles will be installed together on the building by our amazing builders working even more than 9-5 🤩 We’ll share pictures when they are installed so you’ll know right where they are 🏗️

Let the WALLS prep begin!

This week, WCMA interns Chris Rodriguez ‘26, Addison Kiewert ‘28, and Jane Bennett ‘28 moved the WALLS artworks into the Rose Study Gallery to get the collection ready for pickup day on September 27th.

Preparation consisted of first locating the call number on the back of the frame to look up the artwork in the condition management binder. Then, the tension of the picture wire and pressure on the D-rings were examined. These are the components responsible for supporting the weight of an artwork on a dorm room wall.

Frames were checked for dings, and any notable findings were noted in the condition management binder.

Interns then worked away cleaning the plexiglass protecting the artwork.

We are so looking forward to these artworks finding homes on WALLS pickup day on September 27th!

Summer has seen tremendous progress on our new building 🔥

The Consigli Construction Co., Inc team has begun installing the masonry and glass curtain wall facade, and the aluminum shingles are about to be laid out on the roof by Zahner, making the mountainous curves of the building really come alive! Check out these photos and video from Salt Box Films from June and July 👏

Designed by SOLID OBJECTIVES IDENBURG LIU and scheduled to open in the fall of 2027 here at Williams College, the new home for WCMA will include 11 galleries, multiple classroom spaces, an auditorium, and a cafe.

Look who signed one of the shingles for our new building 👀

Yep, that’s the one and only David Letterman, who was in town recently for a project we’ll tell you about a little later on 🤫 But while he was here, WCMA comms intern Pete R asked him to sign a shingle, which he graciously did 🥰

We’ve had a blast over the last month having community members sign these aluminum shingles that are beginning to be installed on our new building. If you haven’t had the chance to leave your own name in perpetuity on our roof, this is the last week to do so: Find us tomorrow, Tuesday, August 4, at Williamstown National Night Out from 4 to 7 at The Spruces, or stop by the museum lobby between 9 and 5 through Friday 🔥

Alien invasion over at WCMA!

Preparator interns Jane Bennett (left) and Addison Kiewert (right) have been working diligently this summer preparing prints for their move to our new building. Last week, Jane and Addison shared some of their favorite selections from the collection with WCMA staff, including “Green Figures” by Nicholas Monro. Many of the prints they have been working with are black-and-white, so the vibrant color of “Green Figures” stood out. Jane and Addison are joined by Leah Welner (middle left) and Shirel Quintanilla (middle right) in recreating these quirky creatures.

Last week, our Williams Summer Arts and Museums Immersion Program had the wonderful opportunity to visit Chicago!

The 4-day adventure took students to cultural strongholds throughout the city, including Terra Fdn. for American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Logan Center Exhibitions, Obama Foundation, Stony Island Arts Bank, Shedd Aquarium, and Field Museum.

The Williams alumni network is out in full force in Chicago, and many Williams alumni and non-Williams alumni alike graciously shared their expertise and knowledge with the cohort. Slide 3 shows students having a blast with Liz Ellrodt ‘83 at dinner on the first night!

Across the art spaces visited, students carefully observed and took notes on the ways visitor experience is successfully shaped. As the fall 2027 opening of our new building draws closer, interns will apply this wealth of knowledge to develop and share their recommendations for the space.

Thank you so much to everyone who made this fantastic trip possible, including our extraordinary organizer and chaperones, Rachel Heisler (Associate Curator of Student Engagement & Gallery Learning) and Lisa Dorin (Deputy Director).

Thank you to all who joined us at our community forum on June 29 at The Williams Inn 🎉

"The Art of the Exterior" presentation featured Pamela Franks and Devon Nowlin of WCMA, Kevin Lamyuktseung of Solid Objectives Isenberg Liu, Linda Just of Perry Dean Rogers, and Danielle Gray of Consigli Construction speaking about the materials and design of our new museum’s facade and roof. Highlights included how the roofline’s flowing shape, reminiscent of the surrounding mountains, is being constructed.

Following the presentation, a reception on the patio was held, complete with a signature WCMA cocktail inspired by the aluminum material of the shingles. Guests were invited to sign some of the 27,000 shingles that soon will be installed on the building, set to open in the fall of 2027 here at Williams College!

A good time was had by all 😂👏🔥
