For almost sixty years, Giorgio Griffa has explored the potential of painting in a practice that is both rigorous and lyrical.

“Giorgio Griffa: Paths in the Forest” marks the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in the United States. Working with unstretched, unprimed canvases and diluted acrylics in soft pastel hues, Griffa embraces what he calls “the intelligence of materials,” creating works he sees as neither representational nor abstract, but as real, material facts.

The forest, for him, is a symbol of the unknown. But it also exemplifies Griffa’s ecological ethic: his commitment to growth and change, difference and interrelation, vitality and intelligence. There is no single path for him, nor intention to escape; the unknown is a place to dwell, in pensive darkness and exultant light.

“Giorgio Griffa: Paths in the Forest” opens June 13 at the Clark’s Lunder Center on Stone Hill.

We are delighted to celebrate Carolina Caycedo’s participation in the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Koyo Kouoh and titled “In Minor Keys,” on view from May 9 through November 22, 2026. For the Biennale, Caycedo brings her signature blend of art, activism, and ecological inquiry.

Clark visitors will remember Caycedo from “Humane Ecology: Eight Positions” (2023), where her vibrant, murals, tapestries, and signs transformed spaces in and around the Conforti Pavilion. The project honored what Caycedo calls “the feminine and feminist labor of care at the center of environmentalism.” Rather than treating nature as something viewed from afar, Caycedo invites us into relationship with it through portraits of plants, people, and land stewards shaped by her deeply rooted, place-based “spiritual fieldwork.” Among the installation’s many meaningful connections was a tribute to Ella Besaw, a Mohican herbalist, honoring the ancestral land on which the Clark stands. Several elements of the work were also created in collaboration with students from the Williams College Art Department.

From Williamstown to Venice, we couldn’t be more excited to see Caycedo’s thoughtful, powerful practice take the international stage.

Battling the pull of a dangerous undertow, rescuers struggle to bring two women safely to shore, their heavy, waterlogged bathing dresses threatening to drag them beneath the waves. The figures feel almost sculptural, their strong, muscular forms modeled after ancient Greek marble statues. In 1883, Winslow Homer witnessed a dramatic seaside rescue near Atlantic City, New Jersey, an event said to have inspired this gripping painting.
