KFGO Christmas Train!

Once again Duane Durr provided a bit of Holiday Cheer to the gang at KFGO by running His RailKing/MTL Canadian Pacific Holiday Train in the AM broadcast studio - while Don Radeck provided an N Scale Amtrak layout in the FM studio

A slight setup error caused a bit of concern but the O gauge train handled it without a problem

Tonite's update: Track Cleaning

The best way to deal with dirty track is to not let it get dirty!

To that end I present one solution - a track cleaning car - make it (and several more if You wish) a regular part of Your layout's trains and watch the magic happen

Tonight's update is about the actual weight of the cars on Your model railroad...since not all trackwork is the same the weight of the cars can help keep things moving and avoid derailments

Another recommendation to keep in mind is to build Your trains with heavier cars in the front of the train

As You will see in the future...I'm a fan of long trains - so individual car weight is an important consideration

I don't worry about the total train weight...if needed I'll just add another locomotive - I've got more total horsepower than John Force Racing !!

The below table is reproduced from NMRA's RP-20.1. To find the optimum weight of a given car, select your scale and find the "Initial Weight". Then take the "Additional Weight" and multiply this by the number of actual inches in the length of the particular car. Add this weight to the "Initial Weight" for the total Optimum Weight of the car. In HO, a 6 inch car should weigh 4 ounces. That is a 1 ounce minimum plus 1/2 ounce per inch of car. 1 + 3 = 4 ounces.

As I mentioned in a reply comment yesterday...

I have scratch built some double-drop flatcars for both HO and N scales...here's a sample of the latter

The lead car has the only coupler...each successive car connects thru the articulating top plate at the front to the rear-truck mounting bolt of the car in front

Each car is approx 5.25 inches ( 70' in N Scale) and carries stacked 20' containers in it's dropdeck

The acorn nuts are not just decoration- they bring the cars to NMRA weight

Some of the newest members of SVMRC are actually N Scale modelers and are very knowledgeable about both DC and DCC systems...so bounce Your questions and We will try to answer them

The message link is at the top right...just below the main page picture

Recognize this locomotive? It's the N Scale Broadway Limited 4141 - in both the Original Version and the Funeral Version that carried GHW Bush on the 77 mile journey from Houston to College Station TX in December of 2018

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the vendors and hobbyists at the 2023 Spud Valley Hobby Show! We had another great event. The bigger space we had made our show and attendance look smaller, but it was almost the same as last year. We love our show home at Red River Valley Fair! Already looking forward to 2024; here are a few snaps from last Sunday.

On December 15, Mark's Hobby Hut store in Fargo closed its doors the last time. Mark passed the following day. His imprint on the F-M area hobby community for four decades was huge; he was responsible for many people finding or continuing their love of model railroading and other hobbies. Many of us at Spud Valley purchased our items and supplies from him regularly. He was warm, accommodating, and helpful to all who walked through the door. We will miss him.
