Happy Feature Friday, everyone~ This week, we bring you the first in a series of Feature Fridays showcasing our collection of nine mosaic tiles. These tiles were created in the early 1930s, with some even being displayed at the Chicago 1933 World Fair. The next year, they were bought by the Daughter of the Pioneers, and given to the CCNDHS in 1954 as it's first items. Each of the times were created by Margaret Kelly Cable of the University of North Dakota, who sold the panels to help keep the art department alive. The panels themselves were created using North Dakota clay to show how strong it is.

Happy Feature Friday, everyone!~ This week, we have a photo of people aboard a Northern Pacific Railway observation-lounge car, part of the North Coast Limited. The NCL was the first entirely electric-lighted train to serve the Pacific Northwest. Observation cars were generally at the very end of passenger trains, but nowadays are mostly only used on excursion and heritage railways with some exceptions. The car's main feature is windows or a platform near the back for passengers to observe and view the scenery.

Happy Feature Friday, everyone!~ This week, we have an old WWII-era Japanese Type 99 Arisaka rifle. Initially meant to replace the Type 38 rifle, Japan started production in 1939, and would use the gun throughout the war. It would see use after WWII by both North and South Korean forces in the Korean War, in addition to use by other East Asian countries. Post-WWII, Japanese soldiers were forced to surrender their guns, including the Type 99. Most guns had the chrysanthemum emblem scratched out before surrender to the Allies to preserve the Emperor’s honor. This specific gun is unusual because the chrysanthemum is intact.

Happy Feature Friday, everyone!~ While we don’t usually do Feature Fridays on more recent items, we have a collection of Dayton’s Santa Bears in preparation for Christmas on the Prairie tomorrow. Originating in Minneapolis, Dayton’s began in 1903, when George Dayton purchased a store, and would start what became a department store empire. In 1985, looking for a way to get shoppers in between Thanksgiving and Christmas, holiday-themed bears were unveiled as a special item for people to buy. It proved a huge success, and they were sold out within hours. This would continue for the next 22 years, each year offering a new theme for the bears, so as to keep people interested, and not have a repetitive design. We hope to see you at Christmas on the Prairie tomorrow~

Happy Feature Friday, everyone!~ This week, we have this curious stamp which shows in big text “ICE CREAM”, and what appears to be a bowl of ice cream. The exact use and purpose of this stamp are unclear, but the history of ice cream is far from unknown. Ice cream is created by blending cream with other ingredients, ranging from stabilizers to prevent it from crystallizing, sugar, and more. The ingredients are churned together in a drum, and the contents are scraped off of the sides. If ice cream wasn’t whipped, you’d get something closer to a chunk of frozen milk. Next time you enjoy the cold treat, think about the process it took to make before you were able to eat it!~
