Old Bridgewater Historical Society Old Bridgewater Historical Society was founded in 1894 and is a local history organization.

Although our museum building is located in West Bridgewater, our focus encompasses all the Bridgewaters -- including East Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, Brockton (originally North Bridgewater), and Bridgewater itself.

Please join us on September 17th for: Eleazer Carver, Bridgewater, and the Rise and Fall of the Cotton-Slave Economy (a lecture).

In his talk, Dr. Ian Delahanty explores the life and career of the renowned Bridgewater cotton gin manufacturer Eleazer Carver. By the eve of the Civil War in 1861, Carver-owned factories in Bridgewater and East Bridgewater, respectively, were the second and sixth largest producers of cotton gins in the United States.

It's not too early to add this to your autumn calendar. The heroic story of the founding of the U.S. Navy during the Revolution has been told before, yet missing from most maritime histories of America’s first war is the ragtag fleet of private vessels, from 20-foot whaleboats to 40-cannon men-of-war, that truly revealed the new nation’s character―above all, its ambition and entrepreneurial ethos. In Rebels at Sea, Eric Jay Dolin corrects that significant omission, and contends that privateers, though often seen as profiteers at best and pirates at worst, were in fact critical to the Revolution’s outcome.

We had a full house last night for Kitty Doherty’s lecture - Bridging the Bridgewaters. The non-profit Natural Resources Trust of Bridgewater is partnering with other groups and many volunteers to create and extend an extensive trail system which will connect the 3 Bridgewaters and more. Standing with Kitty at the podium is OBHS board member David Kubiak.

We had lots of visitors today at the Keith Parsonage, original home of Bridgewater’s first fulltime minister, Rev. James Keith. The parsonage was built in 1662 and currently reflects what life was like in the 1720’s.

Our last Open House at the Keith Parsonage is Sunday, August 16th, from noon to 3 p.m. This is a colonial home on its original site on River Street in West Bridgewater. It was the home of Old Bridgewater's first fulltime minister, the Rev. James Keith, from Aberdeen, Scotland. Rev. Keith was a young man when he was recruited by Increase Mather to come to the "British colony". He was ordained here.

It was so nice to meet Sherry, Peggy and Connie (2nd, 3rd and 4th from the left; Mary O’Connell, OBHS V-P on far left). Our visitors hailed from Texas and Kansas.
