Our second annual Community on the Lawn event is coming up!

Join us around noon to catch The New Grown-Ups bringing a modern twist to American Roots music at the Browne House barn. Their sound blends traditional folk, country, blues, Celtic, old-time, bluegrass, pop, and original songs into a lively contemporary acoustic performance.

Pagan origins, rowdy behavior, and lack of scriptural evidence encouraged the Puritans in England and then in New England to ban the celebration of Christmas.

"It is therefore Ordered by this Court and the Authority thereof, that whosoever shall be found observing any such day as Christmas or the like, either by forbearing labour, feasting, or any other way upon any such account as aforesaid, every such person so offending, shall pay for every such offence five shillings as a fine to the County." Massachusetts Colony Laws & Liberties 1659

While this law was repealed around the time Browne House was erected, the holiday likely remained private or ignored by the family as was common. Christmas didn't become a public holiday in Massachusetts until around 200 years later.
