Space race: how the pandemic is pushing museums to rethink design

"After a nationwide shutdown in March, many museums have gingerly reopened with stringent social distancing rules that profoundly affect the flow of people through entrances and galleries. With visitors often limited to 25% of usual capacity and no clear timeline for a Covid-19 vaccine, museums are opening a conversation about longer-term changes to their buildings. Some ideas have sprung from stopgap safety measures adopted since reopening, while others were germinating even before the pandemic." Read more ⬇️

Everyone is Invited to the New VOMA — the Virtual Online Museum of Art

"VOMA aims to become a hub for debate and discussion around innovation through the digital, to the end of expanding access, enabling new approaches. Through collective ownership, through innovation and debate, we can re-examine what a museum is, how it should work, what it should do.” -Lee Cavaliere, Director of VOMA - Virtual Online Museum of Art

VOMA, the Virtual Online Museum of Art, has opened its virtual doors. With an online debut that attracted enough virtual visits to have "obliterated our servers," says British artist and VOMA founder Stuart Semple, the museum has two exhibitions now open to browse. “I believe art should be for...

Diversity-Inspired Museum Fellowships Are Noble—But Do They Lead to Success?

"Diversity fellowships should be not only opportunities for those who receive them but also for the museums that administer them. Host institutions should be urged to challenge and confront their own histories of exclusion. But such a project requires investment beyond short-term fellowships of one or two years, and those who participate would benefit from a formalized network to connect with other fellows, as well as clear measures as to what might—or might not—count as success."

A participant in the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative reimagines how such programs could provide support.

How to Support the Struggle Against Police Brutality

Black Lives Matter.

IA&A remains committed to its advocacy and fostering of diversity, inclusion, access, and equity through our words, actions, and services to museums and the cultural sector. As we bear witness to the events of the past weeks catalyzed by the indefensible murder of George Floyd, we continue to stand in solidarity with African American communities and other communities of color across our nation. We are outraged by the systemic racism that has been a part of the United States since its founding, and how it continues to manifest through acts of hate, oppression, and inequity against our fellow citizens. We must do better. Individually and collectively, we must come together to effect significant, meaningful change.

Together, we can make a difference. As we redouble our individual and collective commitments to fighting racism, here are some of the ways you can help: Please register and vote (vote.org) — elected officials at all levels of government must reflect and represent their communities. If you are able, support organizations that are working to make a difference. (For ways to help, see the article below or visit https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ for more)

Now is not the time to be silent. Together, we can help raise the voices of those who have been silenced for too long. We have much work to do, and we are committed to doing our part.

Today’s #MuseumFromHome piece was selected by SAM intern Melissa Boyer! Melissa is a graduating senior at Messiah College with a dual Art History and English major. Melissa selected this piece by Jangarh Singh Shyam, featured in the Many Visions, Many Versions: Art from Indigenous Communities in India. Read her thoughts about this work below.
.
“When I first saw Shyam’s painting I was struck by a balance of meticulous details and simplicity. It initially appears to be a modest landscape made by outlined shapes and a monotone background. Then I noticed the details. One of my favorite elements are the markings on the ground and panther which look like they were made by fingers. The pattern on the panther particularly stands out as the fingerprints almost look like claw marks. Shyam’s thoughtful design continues in the patterns that are repeated throughout the tree and deer. The simplicity of the setting: a tree, a few animals, and grass are given great attention and their marks seem to almost vibrate and pulse. Shyam seems to use a version of pointillism, as the small dots along the tree trunk and deer blend together from a distance to make waves of lines. Overall, from the patterns in the panther to the fractal tree branches, this painting emphasizes the idea of devotion to small details. Recently, while we all navigate this time of drastic changes, I have found myself returning to the idea of finding beauty in the small things, and Shyam’s art provides a great reminder.

A body of paintings and prints responding to Lake Mungo are currently being exhibited at the Mildura Arts Centre until 28th June. They now have an online tour of my exhibition 'Mungo' on their website where I talk about why I was drawn to make this body of work. www.milduraartscentre.com.au/Online-Videos.aspx
Hi, I don't know who to contact, but they need to be big. I herd that a body of work consisting of hundreds of thousands of original paintings can be destroyed. Author and artist the reverent Dr Ulrich de Balbian has told me that he would rather burn his work than have the art world go mad in the head over his works. In my opinion he is one of those artists who would be spoken of hundred years from now. He is advancing art and could be considered one of the best if the world could just see. I have personal ties with him and have seen touched and worked with a lot of them and they are really something.I don't have any connections in the art world,, and need to talk to someone in influence position about it. I am in South Africa cell 0844604541 or mail [email protected] but I need help quick. please contact me for further information.
