๐˜‹๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ต is a climate change-based abstract landscape painting by artist Suzanne Yurdin, whose thoughtful ruminations on global warming and its environmental impacts imbue her works with a timely sense of urgency. ๐ŸŒŽ

The deep blue pigments and their melding with various whites, grays, and golds, evoke the image of our melting ice caps, as these colors create a fluid sense of movement and change that is often seen in our Earthโ€™s bodies of water. Yurdinโ€™s works are โ€œreminisces of recently traveled placesโ€ that โ€œtrigger memories rather than describe a specific place,โ€ with the goal of connecting the viewer to our natural world and encouraging them to revitalize their efforts to preserve these spaces. ๐Ÿž

๐˜‹๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ต fits perfectly into the theme of our summer all-members show ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ, as it pushes us to think of which places we will have to say goodbye to in the future due to climate change. ๐Ÿ”

McCartenโ€™s characteristic focus on โ€œrhythm and movement, structure and color relationshipsโ€ are on full display on this canvas, which imbues the last moments of summer with zany energy, as we all hope to relish every second before the days begin to shorten and the cold encroaches. ๐ŸŒ€

Using film transfer techniques in addition to colored pencil, Lesserโ€™s piece has both an ephemeral and timeless impression on the viewer.

The base photograph could be from a moment 20 years ago, or just a couple of days ago. The gauzy white ink blanketing the scene is a self-reflexive addition, a reminder that photographs, or any piece of art, can be subjective and easily changed. ๐Ÿ’ญ

Just as the phrase โ€œsee you soonโ€ can be interpreted in myriad ways, so can the context of this piece. ๐Ÿ’Œ

๐˜Š๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜จ๐˜ญ๐˜ช by Bob Burgess is a bright, eye-catching photograph that embodies the essence of summer memories. โ˜

Camogli, a seaside village in Italy, is a popular tourist destination, where visitors flock each summer to take in the picturesque beaches and scenic fishing spots. ๐ŸŒŠ

Burgessโ€™s image evokes the memories we associate with special places like Camogli, places that we might return to year after year, or places we might have just visited once in our lives, but that have nonetheless made a lasting impact on us. โค

The bold colors of the ocean and the small rowboat sear the image into the viewerโ€™s mind, creating the sensation of a flashback-like memory. This provokes one to think about other places like Camogli, places that we hope to see again soon. โญ

๐˜œ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ by Skyler Henry is a shining example of the talent imbuing our new Kraft Fellowโ€™s collection of work. Currently an undergraduate at Howard University, three of Henryโ€™s pieces are on display for the first time at Studio Gallery in our summer all members show, ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ. โค

๐˜œ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ is a mixed media collage featuring two distinct figures, positioned apart diagonally yet connected through their gazes into each otherโ€™s eyes. Henryโ€™s choice to utilize orange thread, not just to connect the figuresโ€™s lines of sight, but also to add details to the lower figureโ€™s clothing and facial features, creates a dynamic pop of color and energy that guides the viewer through the narrative of the piece. The two figures, although their exact relationship to one another is unknown, clearly share a special bond, and this reflects the nostalgic, interpersonal focus of ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ. ๐Ÿ’Œ

07/26/2023

Today we are thinking back to one of Studio Gallery's excellent past solo exhibitions earlier this year, Ink on a Coffee Stirrer: Female figures in ink and charcoal by our artist member Elizabeth McNeil Harris!

Elizabeth's thoughtful artistic process was on full display in her solo show; she used only charcoal and/or a coffee stirrer with Sumi ink to create all of the pieces before adding a finishing layer of colored chalk. The resulting work has a sense of exploration, freedom, curiosity that stems from that use of materials. There is a clear sense that Elizabeth inhabited the moment of creation fully in these pieces, letting the work come into view as she painted across the canvases with ink and charcoal.

The figures are impressionistic and expand into the surrounding blues and whites of the foreground; the bodies are both contained within themselves and also blend into their surroundings. The entire show questions the lines of separation between self and other. Since all of her figures are faceless, the contemplation is purely somatic, which intensifies the viewer's own examination of how they experience their own body.

Even though this show ended in March, you can still view all of Elizabeth's stunning pieces on our website. Also, make sure to follow Elizabeth at to keep up with her new work!

๐˜ˆ ๐˜Ž๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต by Irene Pantelis is a shining piece from our summer all memberโ€™s show ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ.๐Ÿ’ก

Pantelisโ€™s artistic choices are true to the statement that she provided as the description for the entire show. Her piece is an interaction or encounter between two people, one figure staring rightwards, while the other stares directly at the viewer. ๐Ÿ‘ค

The expressions on the faces of these two people are just as open to interpretation as the phrase โ€˜see you soonโ€™ seems. A viewer could detect hope, longing, contemplation, and perhaps just the act of witnessing. ๐Ÿ‘€

If you would like to witness this piece in person, view the exhibition during our normal gallery hours until August 12th! ๐Ÿ’Œ

There is both distance and proximity between the two large figures in the piece. One holds a phone-like object, and seems to have a radiating presence from its chest. The other figure is covered in swirls, intersected by a tendril-esque element. They are so close, yet in their own worlds. They are on an equal field, but so visually different. ๐Ÿ’ญ

The inclusion of the meteorite pieces adds another layer onto the artwork - is the scene otherworldly, or does the material relate to the metallic materials that our technology is made of? Perhaps both. ๐Ÿ’Œ

Come and see us during our gallery hours to see this piece in person - the meteorites certainly shine under the spotlight! โญ

Blossoming with texture and color, the composition of Binderโ€™s piece emphasizes both natural life and a human figure looking out into a picturesque spot in the Adirondack mountains. The piece is a reflection on not only the seasonal cycles of us humans; referring back to the title of the show, the โ€˜youโ€™ in โ€˜๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏโ€™ can refer to friends and family but also the fish and birds of your favorite places. ๐Ÿž

๐˜‰๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด! By Eleanor Kotlarik Wang is a charming painting that encapsulates the theme of ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ ๐˜š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ, our summer all memberโ€™s exhibition that is currently on display. ๐Ÿ–ผ

The painting blends abstract imagery with representational figures, and its bright colors and energetic lines create a sense of unbridled joy that radiates off from the canvas. ๐ŸŽ‰

The indistinct facial features of the figures allow viewers to put themselves into the moment depicted by Wang, a nostalgic summer moment that we have all most likely experienced once in our lives. Looking at this happy snapshot captured in vivid green, yellow, and blue pigments, we are able to reflect upon those we have shared memories with in the past, and how we hope to make more of these memories together in the future. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Throwback Thursday!

๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฌ is an archival pigment print by photographer Lisa Allen that captures the joy and whimsy of small pets and offers a critique on our modern work culture. Dewie, an adorable dwarf hamster, is positioned in front of a tiny dollhouse laptop, seemingly catching up on work emails. The coffee cup and chair suggest a long day of work, necessitating a comfy seat and plenty of caffeine to get the dayโ€™s tasks done. โ˜•

The humor of a tiny, fluffy hamster working a 9-5 job is captured in this photograph; Dewieโ€™s small nose and tiny hands are positioned over the computer in rapt concentration, in direct contrast with the fact that he is a crepuscular critter who likely spends most of his days sleeping. Lisa Allenโ€™s work often focuses on โ€œunderstated beauty and isolation in modern life, at times found in unusual places or conditions.โ€ ๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ฌ most definitely prompts a meditation on our own work culture, which can sometimes be lonely and exhausting, due to long hours spent in front of computer screens. However, Dewie reminds us to find joy in the little things, and not to take our work too seriously all of the time! ๐Ÿน

Woman Crush Wednesday! โœจ

One of Studio Galleryโ€™s founders, Jennie Lea Knight, was a remarkable artist, curator, and teacher who left a mark on the local arts scene here in Washington, D.C., as well as the nation as a whole. ๐ŸŽจ

Possessing a passion for animals and nature that spanned the entirety of her life, many of her sculptures, paintings, and drawings reflect on her relationship to these subjects. Knightโ€™s work has been displayed in The Phillips Collection, the Corcoran Gallery, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art, and the National Museum for Women in the Arts. She was even a vice-commissioner for the American Pavilion at the 1972 Venice Biennale! ๐ŸŒ€

This Wednesday, we invite you to learn more about this amazing woman and her artworkโ€”check out our website for more info! ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐˜œ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜๐˜ is a work on paper from Yvette Kraft, one of Studio Galleryโ€™s Emeritus members; it is a shining example of her characteristic portrait work. ๐Ÿ‘ค

The colorful figure in the piece has heavy eyebrows, a pointed face, and a noticeably elaborate green outfit. The fresh, summery colors and the unique qualities of the portrait create a fascinating character study. ๐Ÿ‘€

As with all of her work, Kraft is noticeably drawn to depicting the diversity of human experiences, appearances, and dress. Often sketching in-situ in a notebook, she says she is interested in โ€œthe way they are sitting on a chair or walking in the rain with an umbrella, or possibly even wearing an unusual hat.โ€ ๐ŸŽฉ

We are drawn to Kraftโ€™s wonderful pieces in the same way she is drawn to unusual hats! To view more of her work and the pieces she has on sale in our online shop, click the website link in our bio. ๐Ÿ”—

We are very excited to announce our Summer All Members Show titled See You Soon, opening soon on July 19th! ๐Ÿ˜

The show will feature new pieces from our historic cooperative of over 50+ artists! ๐Ÿ’ก

All of the included pieces will focus on the phrase โ€œsee you soon.โ€ Their submissions reflect on the nature of this phrase; โ€˜see you soonโ€™ can be โ€œan invitation, a wish, a leap of faith, a longing, a hope that we will be there in the future and witness what has become.โ€ ๐Ÿ’ญ

Keep your eyes peeled for more previews on our website until the show opens later this month on the 19th! โญ

Displayed in one complete grid in our gallery space, this Canal Street subway stop appears repeatedly as Logan inserts various people to change the context and emotional ambiance of the scene. Her cast of characters is quite diverse: tourists with digital cameras, well-dressed women in big coats, grumpy commuters, and a cowboy, among others. ๐Ÿ‘€

Just like the rest of her solo show, this series of photo collages comments on how easily a composition can change from the emotions and characteristics of its subjects. Upon each changed image, different elements of the Canal Street setting are revealed. ๐Ÿ“ท

Logan writes that โ€œonce the composites become etched in our memories the conundrum of what is real and what isnโ€™t persists.โ€ Just as she says, these images certainly do question our own abilities of perception and understanding in the most fascinating way. ๐Ÿ’ฅ

If youโ€™re interested in seeing the full series, visit the online catalogue at the link in our bio. To see the entire grid in-person, come visit the top floor gallery space to see ๐˜ž๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜ž๐˜ฆ ๐˜š๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ on view until July 15th, 2023! โ˜

Rainesโ€™s new exhibition records the changing seasons as seen from her cabin that sits on a small pond in Rappahannock County, Virginia. Having owned this property for 21 years, these photographs are a true love letter to this slice of the natural world that Raines and her husband have made a home. ๐Ÿž

In this image, bright yellow irises bloom above the clear pond, heralding the start of warm weather and sunshine. The pondโ€™s surface reflects the trees above, creating an entirely new world in the inverse. There is plenty to marvel over and discover in the cabinโ€™s backyard, reminding us all that natureโ€™s beauty is only a stoneโ€™s throw away. ๐ŸŒผ

Stop by Studio Gallery to see the other seasonal iterations of this cabinโ€™s land before the exhibition closes on July 15th! ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐˜–๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ by Halley Sun Stubis is a richly painted, dreamlike piece that provokes the viewer to search inward for other sides to their world or even their own self. Deep tones of red, purple, and peach transport one to the time of dusk, or to a clear night with a shining view of the moon, and the composition of interlocking circles creates a profound sense of duality. ๐ŸŒ™

The genre of portraiture is reinvented here with the subject being divided in twoโ€”at the same time, one is able to view her face as well as the back of her head. The moon motifs hold the flower in place over the young womanโ€™s eyes, perhaps suggesting an inward reflection into personal spirituality. ๐Ÿ”ฎ

๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜บ.๐˜ถ๐˜ฑ. by Veronica Szalus is her latest work shown at Studio Gallery; it is a dynamic and innovative expansion of material into space. ๐Ÿ’ก

๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜บ.๐˜ถ๐˜ฑ. is a found cardboard installation piece, covering the floor up to the ceiling of the space of our lower gallery. It inhabits the walls, the floor, and the physical dimensional spaceโ€”the curved forms are architectural, sculptural, but also free-flowing into the flat surface of the walls. ๐ŸŽถ

The way in which this installation piece permeates the space of the room functions as a questioning of boundaries, limits; it points towards the way we are all interconnected to the materials around us, everywhere and all of the time. ๐Ÿ“

To truly experience this installation, we recommend that you visit our lower gallery in person. This piece is on view along with sculptural collages by Pam Frederick in ๐˜œ๐˜ณ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ|3.0 until July 15th. โญ

Busy streets, telephone numbers, bright thrilling colors: the sights and sounds of a modern city. In her sculptural mural Somewhere in the City, Pam Frederick uses different textures, hues, and shapes to create the same sensory experience for the eyes of the viewer. ๐Ÿ‘€

The piece is seven feet long, and consists entirely of found cardboard, paper, and mixed media. The layered sculptural collage invites the viewer to consider the materials that modern city life brings us into contact with; materials that we pass on the street everyday with no more than a second thought. ๐Ÿš—

Both a celebration and a critical contemplation of city living, this piece, along with the rest of the exhibition Urban|3.0, creates space for reflecting on the facts of daily life here in the city and for reimagining what that life can look like in the future. ๐Ÿ™

Visit our lower level to see this piece in person and appreciate its sculptural qualities, on view until July 15th. ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Ice on Pond with Tree Reflections by Susan Raines is a meditation on nature, time, and what it means to really observe the world around us. ๐ŸŒŠ

Raines began her Pond Reflections series during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, spending a great deal of time contemplating the surrounding landscape of her log cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She wished that she had a view of the mountains themselves, but as she spent more time looking, the pond and trees in the yard seemed to be just as interestingโ€“ especially as photographic subjects in her work. ๐Ÿƒ

The resulting photographs encourage viewers to sit and focus on every detail of each branch, leaf, and lily pad. If youโ€™re looking for an escape from the surroundings of city life, visit the Garden Gallery on our lower floor to see Pond Reflections, on view until July 15th! ๐ŸŒฒ

Pam Frederick and Veronica Szalusโ€™s dual exhibition ๐˜œ๐˜ณ๐˜ฃ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ|3.0 offers a dynamic look into our ever-changing urban environments. Szalusโ€™s circular, cardboard installations perfectly complement Frederickโ€™s vibrant sculptural collages, as they provide a sense of movement and animate the space between each eye-catching wall piece. The viewer is able to stroll around each installation, observing its angles and shadows from all sides, while taking in the similarities and contrasts between the work of both artists. โœจ

The variety of mixed-media utilized by Frederick pulls the viewer into her pieces, and illustrates โ€œthe interconnectedness among urban consumption.โ€ Szalus and Frederickโ€™s combination of sculptural collages and 3D installations turns the entirety of the gallery space into a living cityscape teeming with activity and consumption, and consequently provokes us to reflect on our own, often wasteful, participation in urban systems. ๐Ÿ™

To see more of this fantastic collaboration, stop by Studio Gallery in-person or check out our website to peruse the exhibitionโ€™s online catalogue! ๐Ÿ–ผ
