Announcing Project Postcard: be a part of history. We are living in historic times as we adapt and deal with issues surrounding the covid-19 epidemic. We've encountered changes in work life, home life, and family connections. Many of us have lost family or friends to the virus. Job loss, underemployment, and economic issues impact many. In recent weeks, issues of racial inequality and justice have moved to the forefront. We have also experienced creativity, family re-connection, and appreciation of nature in new ways. We are living through history - and we want to hear your voice. Contact us for your free kit: write your reflections or memories of this time on a provided postcard. Doodle, draw or print a favorite photo. Mail the pre-stamped postcard back to the ACHA for a 2021 exhibit exhibit examining this momentous time. Your work may be anonymous or you may share your name. Sharing your voice makes history relevant to all. Email us at [email protected] to participate in this free program. Program made possible in part with funding from Humanities NY. #humanitiesny #projectpostcard #postcards #documentinghistory #albanyny

The trees at the Ten Broeck Mansion range from stately to surprising! Stop by for our self-guided tree tour, and read on for a free fun family activity. Trees provide beauty, shade, and are a home for birds and wildlife. They are also an important source of nectar for pollinators.
1) Start your tour on the circular drive by the Mansion. Near the front door of the Mansion (looking toward the Hudson River), see our magnificent copper beech (Fagus sylvatica f. purpurea). Copper beeches were brought from Europe in the mid-1700s, and are a popular ornamental shade tree in America. Colors shift from deep coppery-purple in late spring to vibrant shades of gold and red in the fall. One of the oldest trees on our site, it was planted in the 1880s. 2) Continue your walk on the circular drive. The bright magenta leaves of the tri-color beech (Fagus sylvatica f. roseo-marginata) will stop you in your tracks! A popular ornamental from Europe, now in parks and gardens across America today. Its leaves grow in shades of green, pink, and white in the spring and summertime, living up to its name!
3) Walk up the garden path towards the parking lot and look to your right. The kousa or Korean dogwood (Cornus kousa) is a small tree known for its four-petaled white flowers and reddish-purple leaves in autumn. Native to East Asia, this tree was brought to America in the late 19th century and is popular in gardens and parks. Enjoy our shade gardens nearby (another Kousa dogwood is near the circular drive entrance). 4) Cross the parking lot and walk up the wooden stairs - look to your right to the three-trunked tree. The sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus), native to Europe and Asia, is a tree known for its attractive bark. It was brought to this country in the 1870s for horticultural purposes. While its leaves are similar to other maples, it has distinctive scaly bark that looks like it is "peeling." Other sycamore maples are on our site.

There’s quite a buzz: in June, we are focusing on pollinators! Visit the Ten Broeck Mansion gardens, open free to our community from dawn until dusk, and immerse yourself in history and nature. Read on for a free family activity. 1) Meadow rue (Thalictrum): the Ten Broeck Mansion gardens feature a native species, originating from the Adirondack Mountains, and was used by the Iroquois for medicinal use. 2) Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are a magnet for pollinators. They are edible (including the blooms), vitamin rich, and are naturally deer resistant. A favorite 1800s recipe was making chive vinegar to flavor salads. 3) False indigo (Baptisia) is a North American native plant, and was used to make a blue dye by Native Americans and later settlers. 4) Spiderwort (Tradescantia) is another North American native species. It was given its current name to honor the English naturalists and explorers John Tradescant and his son, who introduced many North American plants to England. In Spanish, the flower is often referred to as “flor de Santa Lucia” referring to the plant’s medicinal use as eye drops (not recommended today!) 5) Sage (Salvia officinalis) is vitamin-rich, and used to season food (like Thanksgiving stuffing) and medicinal purposes dating back to ancient Greece. The name comes from the Latin word “to heal.” 6) Peony (Paeonia) are the official flower of China, where they originated from. Peonies were especially popular in American gardens during the 1800s, and are in much Victorian artwork and poetry. Family activity: visit the Ten Broeck Gardens and find each of these flowers. Do you notice any visitors (bees, butterflies, other insects?) Count the number you see. Which had the most? Many hands create beauty for our community. The Ten Broeck Mansion gardens are cared for by the generous volunteer work of Master Gardeners. From our Master Gardeners: "See the peonies at Ten Broeck...most have been in the Ten Broeck gardens, unmoved, for twenty years. My favorite is relatively new there. It is called Scarlett O'Hara and is a large, single red with yellow stamens. It's a very vigorous plant, growing to 30 inches or so tall and wide. The stems are strong and the flowers don't fall. It has been around since 1956. Peonies don't like to be disturbed, so think before you plant. It takes new roots (best planted in the fall) about 3 years to look the way you imagine them. Peonies have few problems, though they do tend to get mildew in the late summer, when they can be cut to the ground and anticipation of another beautiful spring can begin. Try a few in your own garden!" Our gardens are open free to the community from dawn until dusk. Please practice social distancing. #albanyny #mastergardeners #peony #whattodo #historicgardens

Stop by the Ten Broeck Mansion gardens this weekend - the gardens are in bloom above and below! Plus our gardens are a great way to learn new gardening techniques and terms: 1) allee - a garden walkway (often formal) bordered by trees - a style most popular in the 1600s - it makes any home look grand! 2) monochromatic color schemes - diverse garden spaces in the Ten Broeck Gardens feel interconnected through soft pinks, roses, and purples, such as these purple allium 3) contrasts: the rough bark of our hawthorns contrasts with the lacy blossoms of Geranium macrorrhizum 4) be open to surprise: the juxtaposition of a shower of petals on green leaves. Our gardens are open from dawn until dusk and are free to the community. Please practice social distancing. #gardens #historicgardens #allee #allium #gardendesign @ Ten Broeck Mansion
