The Albany County Historical Association operates the 1798 Ten Broeck Mansion as a museum to preserve, promote, present, and interpret the stories of the rich and diverse history and culture of Albany County. We present exhibits, lectures, concerts, and other educational outreach programs, with special service to our own community in Arbor Hill, as well as throughout the county. Our 4 acres with extensive gardens are open free to the community from May-October. Additional gallery and exhibit space is at the adjacent King's Place, built 1852-56 in the Greek Revival style. Educational programs and events are held year-round for children and adults.

This October 10, join us for Before the War: Lives Bearing Witness in Pre‑Revolutionary Albany, New York. Explore the years before the American Revolution as we celebrate our nation’s 250th. Be inspired by innovative research techniques that uncover Albany’s rich and diverse history.

Lectures and Guided Walk: • “Peace Was Proclaimed:” Birth, Death, War & Peace in the 1730 Van Den Bergh Bible • The African Burial Ground: An Ongoing Revolution for Freedom • Guided Walk: From Enslaved Persons’ Living Quarters to the Ten Broeck Burial Site, Ten Broeck Mansion Grounds

Held concurrently with our free Path Through History programs, featuring costumed historical interpreters, the Rapp Road Historical Association, presenting historical groups, and SUNY Press. Enjoy fife and drum music, plus exclusive self‑guided biking and walking tours. Food tent with delicious baked goods by C***r Belly Doughnuts.

Drive through scenic Albany County for special programs in partnership with the Huyck Preserve, Rensselaerville Historical Society, New Scotland Historical Association, John Boyd Thacher State Park’s historic School House, and the Ten Broeck Mansion.

Path Through History Interpreter Spotlight: Maya Terry

Learn about a long-forgotten 18th century conflict which cast long shadows over Albany's history: King George’s War. Albany stood at the crossroads of Dutch trade, Mohawk diplomacy, and the shifting alliances of New France and New England. Travelers moved through the city carrying news, goods, and sometimes warnings of war.

On October 10, meet one such traveler — brought to life through careful research by interpreter Maya Terry.

Maya, a lifelong Albanian with a passion for working‑class history, began hand‑sewing historical garments in 2019. For the past four years, she has researched and created a fully hand‑stitched 1740s French colonial working‑class outfit, inspired by the clothing worn by women who journeyed from New France into early Albany. Her portrayal reflects the world of those who might have crossed paths with the Ten Broecks, Commissioners of Indian Affairs, during a volatile moment in 18th century history.

Learn how Maya researched her clothing, drafted her garments by hand, and explored the deep connections between New France and Albany.

Join us for this exclusive program on October 10 as part of our free Path Through History programs: costumed historical interpreters, free tours, history presentations, a food tent, plus special events across Albany County. This Week at the Ten Broeck Mansion: September gardens are at their finest, capped by our Focus Tour, The Mayor’s Garden, part of the Hudson River Valley Ramble. We welcomed UAlbany Public History graduate students for a tour and behind‑the‑scenes workshop, discussing both the opportunities (and challenges!) of museum life. We welcome applicants to apply our internship program. A highlight of the week is a new accession to our museum collections from a generous donor: delicate porcelain that reflects the artistic and trade networks between early Albany families and Chinese ceramic artists and merchants. Featured pieces date to the late 1700s and were owned by the Ten Broeck and Van Schaick families, complete with family crests and monograms.

We are excited to have finalized our 5th Annual Path Through History Day for October 10, featuring lectures, historical interpreters, free Mansion tours, a guided walk, SUNY Press, historical groups, fife and drum music, and fresh‑baked goods from Albany’s own C***r Belly Doughnuts. Participants receive exclusive, customized driving, walking, and biking tours, centering Albany's history, and can visit partnering historic sites, open specially that day. Be sure to register soon - several programs and tours are almost full. We also welcomed new volunteers and docents as part of our active volunteer program, and continued a busy week of tours and committee meetings.

We capped the week with an outreach program at the Upper Madison Street Fair—rain or shine, the Ten Broeck Mansion is here for you. But hurry: our last tours of the fall season are on October 17, with limited tour spaces still available.
