“Sun, at last! We’re off to Nikki’s Café for breakfast. The one kilometer walk to town starts on little Colla Road that passes in front of the cottage. Here, we keep a sharp eye out for cars ready to dodge them or clamber the rock wall until we reach the heartbreakingly beautiful abandoned church with its well-maintained cemetery. Following the sign, Foreshore Walk to the Pier, we saw the harbor glinting below at the foot of the steep, narrow cement walkway that surrounds a large sheep or cow pasture.

One cannot help but read the names and epitaphs on the gravestones. It sinks in how many people we know in America with those same names, and here are some of their ancestors. One headstone reads, “In loving memory of Eileen Austin, nee Cruise. A lady of no mean spirit and a true Cruise.””

“As we left the exhibit the Heritage Center clerk stopped to compliment me on the book, "Leslie’s Field Guide to Ireland." He wanted some for the Center since so many Americans come there.

In Glandore at the Glandore Inn, we sat by the fire and split tender fish and chips and warmed ourselves. The weather was not as warm as in the painting below from 2010.”

“We drank Caol Islay whiskey, which is preferred after dinner, with Cabuc cheese. Divine. The cheese, impossibly light, is only made in the town of Tain by a woman to whom the recipe has been handed down through the generations, one to the next, since the 1500s. Naturally, her eight assistants have been sworn to secrecy.”

“Off to Gus O’Connor’s pub for the evening, which was full of appreciative listeners to the traditional music and the booths set aside for the musicians swelled to eight or ten people with instruments as the evening progressed. I sketched two women leaning against a post watching with rapt attention as well as Stephen from France with a flute, Angela on a pipe, and all the others crammed in, too many to draw.”

“Here, fine china is mixed with plain. Same for the silver that is polished but not so much as to have lost that beautiful grey tone patina. Fruits and vegetables gathered from their garden—unseen—fill various bowls, a huge hall centerpiece, long past fresh, stalwartly graces the entry cabinet.”

“It was a leisurely morning of writing and drawing maps. Then we were off to explore Aughadown and Prohoness. A word about the spelling and pronunciation of Irish place names—sometimes on maps Aghadown has the letter u, as in Aughadown, and sometimes it doesn’t. When I asked a local about that, she laughed and said ‘Yes, and sometimes it’s pronounced with a soft guttural for the gh, Aghadown, but others pronounce it Affadown. Don’t even get me started on how to pronounce Prohoness,’ she said. I later looked up the meaning of the name Aghadown. In Irish, Achadh Duin, means ‘the field of the fort.’ As it turns out, my later exploration of the word Prohoness would lead me to the answer of a great mystery.”
