I am currently in Dominican Republic. When I visit my aunt's house, I recognize and thoroughly enjoy what it is I love about Dominican interiors.
It starts with the which looks for ways to integrate the indoors and outdoors whenever possible. There is an expectation of open doors and windows, letting the fresh air in, and bringing the lush plants into the home.
Then, it is about light. When you cant depend on electricity 100%, you have to build natural light into the space.
The materials impact sound - cinder block homes sound different than wooden ones. The exterior is close but muffled, the inside echos more. Not better, not worse. Just different.
And then, there is the original art. It is everywhere. The paintings, the furniture, the reupholstered chairs. These are mixed with mass-produced items, because the look good.
Because ultimately all of this is legacy. Not luxury.
Every person I know hangs SOMETHING on their wall. Actually, they hang multiple things. Family pictures, a pretty painting, a nice flower vase.
I am inviting you to be more intentional. You are going to buy these items anyways, why not make them ? Legacy items that you can pass on to future generations as a testament of your time. Beautiful artifacts that will also increase generational wealth in your lineage, not in Marshall's or Macy's pockets.
