On September 17 at 7:00 p.m., join us for a free lecture exploring Long Island’s role in one of the darkest chapters of world history.

Historian Mark Torres , author of “Long Island and the Legacy of Eugenics: Station of Intolerance,” will examine the history of the eugenics program developed by the Eugenics Record Office in Cold Spring Harbor during the early 20th century and how its ideas spread across the nation and around the world. Mark will explore the local figures and influences behind this dangerous pseudoscience, as well as its devastating consequences.

Following the lecture, Mark Torres will be available to sell and sign copies of his book.

ON VIEW: Discover the rich history, vibrant cultures, and enduring legacy of Long Island’s First Peoples in “Enduring Heart: Native American Long Island,” now on view at The Long Island Museum through December 20, 2026.

Home to 2.9 million people today, Long Island is filled with places that bear Algonquian names—Hauppauge, Ronkonkoma, Wantagh, Mastic, Montauk, and many more. No matter your own background, understanding the complex, interconnected, and ongoing story of Native American Long Island deepens our appreciation of the place we all call home. Explore artifacts and art from Tecumseh Ceaser (Matinecock Turkey clan, Montaukett, and Unkechaug), Jeremy Dennis (Shinnecock), David Bunn Martine (Shinnecock-Montauk/Nde Daa'i (Nednai) Chiricahua Apache), Lydia Ann Wallace-Chavez (Unkechaug/Kainai Blackfoot), and many more.

Developed in consultation with an advisory panel of Native American community members and scholarly experts, “Enduring Heart” is the first exhibition at LIM to explore both the historical experiences and the vibrant artistic legacies of our region's Native American communities.

Today is , and we’re throwing it back to earlier this year, when LI radio legend Larry “The Duck” Dunn—one of the original DJs at WLIR and current host on SiriusXM’s 1st Wave—joined us for a free screening of “New Wave: Dare to Be Different.”

The film tells the story of how WLIR, a small Long Island radio station, helped revolutionize American radio by introducing New Wave and post-punk music to U.S. audiences. From the airwaves of Long Island to a nationwide cultural phenomenon, WLIR proved that a small station could make a very big impact. After the screening, Stony Brook University’s Norm Prusslin spoke to Larry about his time at the radio station, giving our audience a behind-the-scenes look at this important time in radio history.

We hope that you will join us next month for this fascinating look into Native American Culture with Chenae Bullock, a Shinnecock Indian Nation Tribal Member.

This program explores the historical significance of mishoons (dugout canoe) within Indigenous communities, the cultural knowledge embedded in their creation, and the contemporary efforts to restore these traditions.

Participants will gain insight into how revitalizing mishoon practices strengthens community identity, preserves ancestral skills, and reconnects people to the waterways of the region.

Come early to explore the “Enduring Heart: Native American Long Island” exhibit opening that day, with free admission after 5:00 pm.

This , we’re taking things to the runway—both fashion and airplane! ✈️ Take a look back at ‘70s flight crew fashion, on view in our “Long Island in the ‘70s” exhibition, with pieces generously on loan from the Pan Am Museum Foundation inside the Cradle of Aviation.

From polished pilot and stewardess uniforms to branded suitcases and document cases featuring its distinctive blue globe logo, see what traveling in style looked like over half a century ago.

Let us know in the comments if you have memories of air travel when dress codes were a bit stricter.

BEHIND THE SCENES: Our team is hard at work putting the final touches on our new exhibition, “Enduring Heart: Native American Long Island,” opening this Thursday, August 20th.

We are frequently asked — and yes, we do have a surrey with the fringe on top! It is difficult to walk past this beautiful horse-drawn vehicle in our Carriage Museum without humming a little bit of the beloved Oklahoma! show tune. 🎶🐴

These lightweight, open-sided carriages were designed for comfortable recreational and social outings. Their distinctive fringed canopy provided some protection from the sun, while the open design allowed passengers to enjoy the fresh air and scenery. Perfect for a beautiful summer day!
