The Long Island Museum

The Long Island Museum Permanent and changing exhibitions along with the finest collection of horse-drawn vehicles in the country illustrate Long Island's rich cultural heritage.

The Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection, alongside our world-class carriage collection. Located in the heart of Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum offers three exhibition buildings, gardens, outdoor sculpture, a one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop and other historic buildings. Public programs, music, workshops, lectures and special events are offered throughout the year. Membership is available.

Join us on Saturday, July 26, from 1:00–4:00 PM for an afternoon of swashbuckling fun for the whole family!

⚓ Featuring a stage show by Timeless Tales Entertainment, LLC, packed with silly pirates, a magical mermaid, audience participation, and plenty of nautical nonsense!

Come dressed as your favorite pirate, mermaid, or sea creature and dive into free entertainment, crafts, games, museum exploration, and more.

Join sound healing practitioner Toni Ann Nazimek on Friday, June 20, from 7:00–8:00 PM for a peaceful Summer Solstice Sunset Sound Bath on our beautiful museum grounds.

Experience the soothing sounds of crystal singing bowls, Tibetan bowls, chimes, and gongs as you unwind in nature and embrace the energy of the longest day of the year. This immersive session offers an opportunity to reflect, restore, and recharge while surrounded by the beauty of nature! Please bring your own blanket or mat to relax on. 🪷

Visitors to “Enduring Heart: Native American Long Island” will have the unique opportunity to meet featured artist Durrell Hunter, a Shinnecock Indian Nation Tribal Member, in the gallery on July 19 from 2:00–4:00 PM. Durrell will casually speak with visitors about his artwork, creative process, and the stories that inspire his paintings.

A fine artist from Long Island, Durrell creates intimate portraiture and landscapes that preserve and uplift the experiences of the Shinnecock people. Working primarily in acrylic, his narrative-driven paintings document important milestones within the Shinnecock Nation and reflect the lived experiences of his generation.

This program is included with museum admission. No registration required.

“Enduring Heart” will be on view at LIM from July 16 through December 20, 2026.

This , we’re showing our patriotic pride with a throwback to the 1970s and the classic Lite-Brite, one of the retro toys on view in our “Long Island in the ‘70s” exhibit, on view at LIM through October 18, 2026!

Although introduced in 1967, Lite-Brite was a staple in many bedrooms in the ‘70s, sparking young imaginations across the globe. It was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2022.

A Vermont-based duo blending psych folk, chamber folk, and baroque pop into a richly textured, story-driven sound.

Join us on June 18 at 1:00 PM for an engaging discussion with Chenae Bullock, a Shinnecock Indian Nation Tribal Member, on the revitalization of mishoon (dugout canoe) culture across Long Island.

This program explores the historical significance of mishoons within Indigenous communities, the cultural knowledge embedded in their creation, and the contemporary efforts to restore these traditions.

Participants will gain insight into how revitalizing mishoon practices strengthens community identity, preserves ancestral skills, and reconnects people to the waterways of the region.

👉 This program is included with museum admission. Space is limited, so registration is requested at longislandmuseum.org/mishoon

Take a stroll through art and nature at The Long Island Museum!

Join us on June 25 from 5:00–6:00 PM for a FREE educator-led tour of the museum’s beautiful grounds, where you'll discover stunning outdoor sculptures and the stories behind them.

After the tour, settle in for a FREE outdoor performance (indoors if raining) of Shakespeare’s beloved comedy "Much Ado About Nothing" presented by EastLine Theatre.

✨ Plus, museum admission is FREE on Thursdays from 5:00–7:00 PM, so be sure to explore our galleries after the program.

Get groovy with us at the Long Island Museum for an evening of art and '70s-inspired fun on July 10th for Vintage Vinyl: Paint & Pour Workshop!

Start with a guided tour of our totally outta-sight “Long Island in the ’70s” exhibition at 5:30 PM, then head to the Studio for a hands-on creative experience inspired by the decade of bold colors and self-expression.

Create your own vibrant abstract artwork using acrylic pour painting on retro vinyl records—no experience necessary! Whether you're an aspiring artist or just looking for a fun night out with friends, this workshop is the perfect way to dive into the spirit of the ’70s.

💿 $5 materials fee payable at the door
