The Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection, alongside our world-class carriage collection. Located in the heart of Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum offers three exhibition buildings, gardens, outdoor sculpture, a one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop and other historic buildings. Public programs, music, workshops, lectures and special events are offered throughout the year. Membership is available.

NOW HIRING: Manager of Donor Engagement

The Long Island Museum is seeking an experienced, strategic, and relationship-oriented Manager of Donor Engagement to join our Development team!

This part-time position will play an important role in advancing LIM’s fundraising goals through major gifts, donor stewardship, institutional giving, and strategic development initiatives.

The Manager will help identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors and prospects while strengthening LIM’s fundraising strategies, donor pipeline, and board and volunteer engagement.

• 28 hours per week
• Salary Range: 30–32 per hour
• Immediate opening
• Benefits include PTO and voluntary 403(b)

On November 14 at 1:00, join anthropological archaeologist Allison McGovern, PhD, RPA, Cultural Resources Manager at Brookhaven National Laboratory, for an engaging program exploring the complex relationship between archaeology and Native American history.

The program begins with a seated presentation, followed by a guided talk and walk through LIM’s “Enduring Heart: Native American Long Island.” Discover how archaeological practices have shaped our understanding of Native American communities and the challenges that can arise when studying Indigenous histories and cultural heritage. McGovern will also discuss emerging approaches that center Native perspectives and offer hopeful possibilities for a more respectful and collaborative future.

Join us on November 18 at 7:00 pm for a virtual lecture with Linford D. Fisher, author and Professor of History at Brown University, to focus on his new book, “Stealing America: The Hidden Story of Indigenous Slavery in U.S. History,” and the lesser-known stories of Native enslavement and land loss throughout American history.

In his book, Fisher demonstrates how the enslavement of Indigenous people began in the years just after 1492, ensnaring an estimated three to six million Natives throughout the Americas. Although largely erased from the public consciousness, Native enslavement continued for centuries to become a colossal phenomenon that affected nearly 600,000 Native Americans in North America alone, revealing the shocking truth that American colonizers enslaved Natives in roughly the same numbers as they imported enslaved Africans. Fisher is Professor of History at Brown University and a specialist in early American and Native American history.

THIS SATURDAY! Free admission for Veterans and active duty military!

Join us on October 17 at 1:30 pm for a special screening of “Walk With Frank” (2021), followed by a Q&A with Frank Romeo, who will share his personal journey and decades of advocacy on behalf of veterans and those living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

After graduating from Bay Shore High School in 1967, Frank enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the 199th Infantry Brigade in Vietnam, a rapid-response unit that carried out intense ground combat missions, often deploying directly into battle by helicopter. During a mission in Cambodia, Frank was seriously wounded in an ambush and spent more than a year recovering in military hospitals. When he returned home to Long Island, he struggled for years with what would later be diagnosed as PTSD. His remarkable story of resilience, recovery, and service is told in this acclaimed documentary.

In addition to the discussion, Frank will exhibit artwork created by veterans living with PTSD, offering a powerful perspective on healing through creative expression.

🕹️ Simon says, “Come check out Long Island in the ’70s one last time!”

Before the exhibition closes this Sunday, October 18, we’re spotlighting one last nostalgic toy from the 1970s!

Simon is an electronic memory game that challenges players to repeat an increasingly tricky sequence of lights and sounds. First introduced by the Milton Bradley Company in 1978, Simon hit store shelves with a price tag of $24.95—that’s a whopping $127.84 in today’s dollars! Join us on Friday, November 13, at 6:00 pm for a fun, fall-inspired workshop! Create a one-of-a-kind felt portrait using colorful felt shapes and crafting adhesives. Turn a favorite photo or your imagination into a textured 2D portrait of yourself, a family member, or even a beloved pet! These handmade keepsakes also make wonderful holiday gifts.

Workshop Details:

LAST CHANCE! Don’t miss your opportunity to experience our two summer exhibitions, “Long Island in the ’70s” and “The Seat of Action: Long Island in the American Revolution & Beyond,” before they close on October 18, 2026!

First, take a groovy trip back to the 1970s! This far-out exhibition features fashions from LIM’s collection, a 1973 AMC Matador station wagon, milestone toys and sports memorabilia, and artwork and photography capturing the decade’s changing times. Look into the past with an immersive, fully furnished ’70s living room filled with authentic period pieces, made possible through the generosity of private lenders and the help of Rosie's Vintage in Huntington, NY.

Then, travel even further back in time! Explore Long Island’s role in the American Revolution in our exhibition commemorating America’s 250th anniversary. Through a compelling collection of artifacts and paintings, discover the people and stories that shaped our region during the Revolutionary War. Highlights include a rare portrait of Benjamin Tallmadge, George Washington’s spymaster and a key figure in the Culper Spy Ring, on loan from the Litchfield Historical Society.
