Throwback Thursday - a favorite memory of ours!

In 1931, Amelia Earhart landed at Knollwood Field, which became the Moore County Airport of today. She is pictured with Lloyd Yost, the airport manager at the time. The hangar seen in the background can still be found at the Moore County Airport, as can more photos of Earhart during her time visiting Knollwood Field.

At the inaugural Old Slave Day reunion in 1934, about 86 former slaves of antebellum families in the Moore County and Southern Pines area attended a picnic provided by their former owners downtown. The reunion was repeated every spring for several years.

In "County of Moore" Manly Wade Wellman wrote at some length about Old Slave Day, inaugurated in Southern Pines in April, 1934:
"Eighty-six elder people of color, once chattels of antebellum families of Moore County, assembled to eat a dinner prepared by the townfolk and reminisce about the old times, happy or otherwise. Notable among them was Demus Taylor, once the stalwart turpentine worker who had serviced two man-sized strings of turpentine boxes and drew therefore double pay and double rations. In 1934 he was 106 years old but still lively and throngs gathered around the bench in the public park to hear his stories. Also admired and praised was the Reverend T.B. McCain, once a slave, now a minister of the gospel and proud of two children who had become doctors. The event became an annual observance.”

Lecture on Historic Southern Pines Postcards

Historian and local author, Dr. Julia Hans, will speak about the history of the Penny Postcard in the United States. She will talk about the unique postcard collections at the Moore County Historical Association (MCHA) and how they helped shape her most recent book with Arcadia Publishing, Postcard History Series: Southern Pines.

The new book features more than 200 historic postcards from the MCHA collection and tells the story of Southern Pines from the perspective of penny postcard writers and reader. Her book will be for sale at $24.99. Cash, check or Venmo accepted.

On Saturday, May 30, 2026, the Moore County Historic Association’s second Colonial Day event will take place at the Shaw House property in Southern Pines from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The activities are free as a family event.

Activities will include Colonial reenactors in period dress, crafts from the period
including a blacksmith, basket weaving, spinning, period children's games, and hourly short talks about the time period and events. There will be exhibits and tours of the Property’s homes (Shaw House, Sanders Cabin, and Garner House) and the Agricultural Museum.

There will also be information tables for the Daughters of the American Revolution
(DAR) and Scottish Heritage USA.
