Fox River Trolley Museum A page for our members and guests to check in and find out the latest information on events and other happenings around the museum!
COME RIDE WITH US at the Fox River Trolley Museum, a nostalgic trip back to an era when the electric trolley car was a vital part of American life. Experience EDUCATION THROUGH DEMONSTRATION the sights and sounds of this unique part of American history aboard a genuine old-time trolley car such as car Aurora, Elgin and Fox River Electric ( AE&FRE) # 304 acquired in November of 2009. This car will take you for a ride just as it did in 1935 over these same tracks on a four mile round trip along the banks of the scenic Fox River and in the Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve. The museum also operates a variety of other antique trolleys, many from lines long vanished, over trackage that once connected Carpentersville, Elgin, Aurora, and Yorkville. A visit to the Fox River Trolley Museum is educational and fun for the entire family. Celebrate birthdays and anniversaries on chartered trains at the Museum.

A page for our members and guests to check in and find out the latest information on events and other happenings around the museum! We are a not-for-profit organization that focuses on educating future generations on the history of Electric Railroads from the Chicagoland area. Check out our page to find out how to become more involved!

Mission: Education through demonstration.

Dads Take the Throttle
Don't get dad another tie for Father's Day!

Give him the BEST Father's Day gift ever -- the chance to drive a TRAIN!

Our Take the Throttle experience allows dad to operate a REAL locomotive, interurban, or rapid transit car out on the mainline of the Fox River Trolley Museum. He'll take the controls for an hour of track time: notching up the throttle, applying the brakes, and blowing the whistle.

This will be an experience he will NEVER forget! As a bonus, he'll get a signed Certificate of Achievement suitable for framing as well as a one-year Family Membership to the Fox River Trolley Museum!

Call (847) 697-4676 or email [email protected] for details.

Remember, dad always rides free with a fare-paying child on Father's Day!

The only thing more broken than the windows damaged inside our Museum barn, were our hearts! The Fox River Trolley Museum suffered a terrible burglary, that was discovered on July 7th. As reported everywhere, two boys, 11 & 13 used pick axes to break through a wall and did over $110,000 of damage...

Ride the rapid transit

Ever wanted to ride vintage 1920’s ‘L’ cars in their native environment, but without crowds or waiting in line, while also supporting the preservation of those cars and others like it? The CTA and the Fox River Trolley Museum (FRTM) invite you to join them for an special day-long trip aboard CTA’s 1923-vintage railcars 4271-4272, the crown jewel of the CTA’s vintage vehicle collection, to support the preservation efforts of the CTA Heritage Fleet Program and the Fox River Trolley Museum

The fundraiser trip will take place Saturday, May 11, 2019, and begin at Linden at 9 AM. The day-long trip will see the Heritage 4000-series cars visit the North Side main line, Loop, 63rd and Harlem ends of the Green Line, the Pink Line to 54th, and the Orange Line to Midway, the photography opportunities along the way. Each ticketed rider will have a seat for the entire trip.

Tickets are $150 per person, in advance. Tickets are sold first-come, first-served, and are limited in quantity. Proceeds from the ticket sales go to support the CTA Heritage Fleet Program and Fox River Trolley Museum. Tickets are nonrefundable.

These special, nearly-century old rapid transit cars have been lovingly maintained, and exude a vintage charm that always brings a smile to the faces of those who see them. Riding them on the ‘L’, as they were originally enjoyed, is a singular and unforgettable experience. They are only used for a few events each year, so this is a rare opportunity, especially to have the train to yourself and a small group of guests, all while helping assure the cars and others like them are preserved for future generations to enjoy—don’t miss out!

About the Heritage Fleet Program: The CTA Heritage Fleet Program is designed to preserve and celebrate CTA’s history. The program, established in 2016, was created to ensure that our vintage buses, rail cars and other equipment are preserved and maintained so they can be remembered and enjoyed through charters and events held for the public. The program is supported by revenue generated by CTAgifts.com (our online gift shop), while repair and upkeep of the vehicles is provided through the generous volunteer work of CTA employees, retirees, and industry experts. About Fox River Trolley Museum: The Fox River Trolley Museum is a not-for-profit, founded in 1961, dedicated to the preservation Chicago's electric railway heritage and interpretation of the lines' colorful history. To our volunteers and members, thank you does not even begin to express our gratitude for all the hard work and time you have all put in this year! To our many donors, whether it be an individual, organization, or business, without your support we would not have had the amazing year that we did!
