Today we remember the Line of Duty Death of Fire Chief David Sharp in 1908. Sharp was initially a member of Elgin’s Mutual Hose (Volunteer) Company, being elected in November of 1881. He was later appointed as Fire Chief in May of 1905.

While conducting an inspection with the City Building Inspector, Chief Sharp fell from the fire escape of the Hotel Fosgate on Division Street. The fire escape was three stories high and failed during inspection, causing him to fall and land on the pavement below. Chief Sharp died from his injuries the following day at Sherman Hospital, May 12, 1908.

Join us as we honor and remember Illinois firefighters who have lost their lives over the past year.

The Elgin Fire Department will host the 34th Annual Elgin Area Firefighter Memorial Service on Saturday, May 16 at 10:00 a.m. at the Illinois Firefighter Memorial Plaza (533 St. Charles St., Elgin).

The annual service brings together the Elgin Fire Department and approximately 20 surrounding fire departments to honor and remember Illinois firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year, as well as active and retired members of participating departments who have passed away off duty.

The event is open to the public and will also be livestreamed on the city's YouTube page (YouTube.com/CityOfElgin). Please join us in remembrance and gratitude.

May 4 was chosen as the date to celebate International Firefighter' Day as it is also the Feast Day of St Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters.

A Roman officer known for his courage and leadership, St Florian is remembered for his role in organising firefighting brigades and for standing firm in the face of danger.

His legacy lives on in firefighters around the world today.

On this day, we honour not only tradition—but the enduring spirit of service and protection. We celebrate and thank brave firefighters around the world who risk their lives to protect our communities. Your courage, commitment, and dedication never go unnoticed. Stay safe, and know that you are deeply appreciated.
