Many are still mourning the unofficial end of summer! However, there are some fun things you can do right here in Woodbury County for during these late-summer weekends that'll keep you close (and won't break the bank!).

Those with children should never overlook the Sioux City Railroad Museum or Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center! Also, this weekend marks the end of the Sioux City Explorers final homestand of the regular season, where they aim to take down the Kane County Cougars.

As always, a scenic drive through the beautiful Loess Hills is always in order, and you could swing by a noted rural restaurant like Fireside Fireside Steakhouse & Lounge in Anthon, or Schrank's Bar & Grill in Danbury, to name a couple.

Ready to grab a trowel and dig into Sioux City’s railroad history?

We’re calling on history lovers, community members, rail enthusiasts, and curious minds to join us for an exciting hands-on project at the Sioux City Railroad Museum!

Starting September 24 through October 2, 2026, we are partnering with the Office of the State Archaeologist (OSA) for a Phase II archaeological study. This project marks the second investigation at our historic site, building on the amazing Phase IA study that uncovered over 6,000 artifacts and data elements!

What We're Unearthing
We’re on a mission to search for the 1916–1918 construction labor camps that housed 350–400 workers who built the original roundhouse, repair shops, and engine terminal.

This project kicks off our 3-year commemoration of the Milwaukee Railroad Repair Shops terminal! Plus, on September 28, we’ll mark the exact date in 1916 when the original site excavation and grading began with mules and manual labor.

How YOU Can Help
We need community volunteers to work directly alongside professional archaeologists in the field and in a field lab. Volunteer slots are limited to 8 per 4-hour shift.

In the Field: Help with test unit excavations and soil matrix screening.
In the Lab: Help wash, process, and examine recovered artifacts.

No professional experience needed — just enthusiasm for local history!

It's almost time for Christmas in July!
