The Sioux City Public Museum explores the region's history and culture, showcasing diverse permanent exhibits from prehistoric times to the modern era alongside exciting traveling exhibits, and fun, family oriented events and programming. The Sioux City Museum & Historical Association is a 501(c)(3) membership organization that provides funding for exhibits and programming for the Sioux City Public Museum and its sites. Currently, the Association is more than 200 members strong.

On this day in Sioux City history: Title IX became federal law on June 23, 1972. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on s*x and requires equitable opportunities for female sporting programs in schools. Before this girls’ athletics had mostly been limited to intramural sports locally, except for the Briar Cliff women’s basketball program that launched in 1969. Since then, women’s and girls’ sports have flourished in Sioux City.

On this day in Sioux City history: The opening game for the Sioux City Explorers baseball team was June 22, 1993. Part of the newly organized Northern League, the Explorers ended a more than thirty-year dry spell for professional baseball in Sioux City. The final construction of Lewis and Clark Park had actually been completed that morning by the Chris Larsen Construction Company. More than 4,000 fans packed the seats for the opening game. Former astronaut Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin threw the game’s opening pitch. The Explorers lost the opener against the Rochester Aces, but for the rest of that season, Lewis and Clark Park averaged 3,000 fans per game. Images are courtesy of the Sioux City Journal.

On this day in Sioux City history: June 18 & 19, 1925 was the 3rd Annual Convention of the Iowa Association of Fire Fighters. More than 200 fire fighters and their wives attended the convention at the Hotel Martin. The assembly was transported by specially chartered street cars to Riverside Park for a picnic lunch and this group photo on June 18 at 11:00 a.m. "No. 6185" inscribed bottom right corner on image.

On this day in Sioux City history: The last day of Sioux City streetcar operation was commemorated with this souvenir ticket for "The Final Run" on June 17, 1948. The streetcars ceased operations after 64 years of service.
