On this day in Sioux City history: Sioux City’s first newspaper, the Sioux City Eagle was consolidated with the Sioux City Register on October 15, 1859. The Sioux City Eagle was created by Seth W. Swiggett in July of 1857. Swiggett had managed papers in Cincinnati and Des Moines before starting the Eagle. After the Eagle and the Register combined, Swiggett started the Sioux City Times and the Oracle, but neither publication lasted very long. The Sioux City Register continued printing until 1924.

On this day in Sioux City history: A Victory Parade celebrating the end of WWII was held on October 15, 1945. This image shows Boy Scouts carrying Woodbury County service flags with 10,852 blue stars and 351 gold stars (looking east on 4th St. from Pierce Street).

Happy National Dessert Day!

Younker-Davidson’s and Younker-Martin’s were known for the “Annaclairs.” These were candies featuring a vanilla cream center, rolled in pecans and dipped in chocolate.

On this day in Sioux City history: James Booge arrived in Sioux City, then a little town of only 500 residents, on October 11, 1858. With the supply of apples, flour and wh***ey he brought with him, he opened a wholesale grocery company. Booge's purchase of a steamboat's water-logged load of wheat led to the start of a successful meat-packing business. On this day in Sioux City history: On October 9, 1957, the relocated stretch of highway 12 north of Sioux City reopened to the public. This stretch of highway was one of the longest stretches of paved highway installed in the state of Iowa in 1957.

On this day in Sioux City history: A ceremony to rededicate the War Eagle Monument was held on October 8, 1994.
