Lamar Peterson’s paintings, like No Time for Weeds, use vibrant color to explore themes of Black male identity, self-care, and fragility. His work often features fantastical elements and stylized figures set within lush, garden-like environments, turning nature into a site of peace, beauty, and reflection. These spaces feel at once playful and intentional, shaped by imagination as much as lived experience.

Today we learned the sad news that acclaimed photographer David Plowden passed away. At 93 years old, he wrote 22 books and made a massive impact on generations of American artists, especially his photographs of trains, steamboats, and bridges. Plowden loved the Great Plains and Midwest too, especially Iowa, “I think I have more pictures of Iowa than any place.” He will be dearly missed. “David Plowden’s Iowa,” on loan from , is currently on view through September 20, 2026.

Lee Allen
Corn Country, 1936
Oil on Masonite
University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art, Gift of Dr. Clarence Van Epps, 1947.1

Lee Allen’s Corn Country captures the serene, ordered beauty of Midwestern farmland, emphasizing the deep roots of American agriculture. Painted during a time of rapid industrialization, the work is both a tribute and quiet resistance to the sweeping changes of the era. While factories rose and urban centers expanded, Allen’s landscape preserves the dignity of rural life, highlighting the steady rhythms of crop cycles and human labor. Corn Country invites viewers to ask themselves: what is gained, and lost, as machines increasingly shape the American landscape?
