"Reality is to be found in lightness and darkness". (Pablo Picasso)

A watercolor I did last spring of the red Emperor tulips in my flower garden entitled "Sunshine Standing Quietly By My Door". The tulips are blooming again and I'm taking many photos trying to capture their vibrant colors, and the light coming through the petals.

"Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do".
Edgar Degas

It is the height of harvest season, days are shorter, very dry and clear. I love the history of old buildings, barns, and abandoned things, and take many photos in our travels. That inspired this recent painting, which I am tentatively calling "Twilight and Faded Dreams". If you have a title which you think fits the mood of the piece............offer suggestions, please. "I haven't failed, I've found 10,000 ways that don't work." - Thomas Edison

After a "crisis of confidence" with my last two works............one of which I ended up cutting apart and then discarding the other, I began to sketch this from a reference photo (thank you Becky Orton for the use of your photo).. Tried three different sketches and three different approaches! After much thinking, I began the final painting wanting to emphasize the darker background and the light pink colors of the hollyhocks. Here is my tribute to the season "Hollyhock Summer" , 11x 15 in transparent watercolor..

I was experimenting with the technique of "poured watercolor" in this painting. Inspired by watercolorist Linda Baker, I mixed three separate containers of transparent blue, yellow, and red. After masking part of my drawing to preserve the white, I poured the colors one at a time and allowed them to mingle on the paper. I masked part of the stem, then added another container of green and poured.that over the paper. The results give a depth of color, and flecks of different colors in the background. Messy, but fun process!
