Mountaineers are always free. On June 20, 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, West Virginia joined the Union as the 35th state. Today, Historic Shepherdstown Museum is flying the West Virginia flag to commemorate the anniversary. In addition, we have a rare 35-star American flag in our foyer. Today is Flag Day. It commemorates the date in 1777 on which the Continental Congress adopted the American flag. Stop by the Museum this afternoon between 1 and 4 to view our recently-installed 35-star flag, which commemorates West Virginia's entrance into the Union in 1863.
