Two doors down from us this First Friday, October 2 — Ken Rowe sculpts a live animal model in clay, 4–7pm at Rowe Fine Art Gallery. Watch a bronze begin, then walk over to Masquerade Night at Creative Gateways Gallery.

Before the foundry, before the fire, there is a wire skeleton and a block of oil clay — and an animal that won't hold still.

On Friday, October 2, Ken Rowe starts a sculpture from nothing on the gallery floor and works it in front of you for three hours. The model is alive. The species is a surprise until the night.

Lana Nguyen paints paper, cuts it by hand, and builds the desert one layer at a time — a prickly pear is dozens of pieces, a jackrabbit is more, and every piece went down in order under resin. There is no going back a layer.

Look close. Every color you see is a separate piece of paper: painted first, then cut, then placed — landscape at the back, wildlife at the front, gold leaf where the light hits the ground. Then resin, and the whole thing goes glass-still.
