Thank you to the for supporting indigenous-led tourism and helping share Duwamish culture with visitors from across the state and beyond.

We hold our hands up to our many funders, supporters, friends and relatives whose support is vital to help move our work forward while we fight for federal status.

We are still here.

Today we celebrate love in all its forms โ€” love for our families, our children, our Elders, our ancestors, our lands, and our waters.

For thousands of years, the Duwamish people have loved and cared for this place โ€” from the shores of the Duwamish River to the forests and mountains beyond. Love is stewardship. Love is community. Love is remembering who we are and where we come from.

This Valentineโ€™s Day, we invite you to:
๐Ÿค Share a story with an Elder
๐Ÿค Teach a child something meaningful
๐Ÿค Support Indigenous artists and businesses
๐Ÿค Learn whose land youโ€™re on
๐Ÿค Spend time in gratitude for the water and land that sustain us

Love is not just a feeling โ€” itโ€™s action. Itโ€™s connection. Itโ€™s responsibility.

With love and gratitude,
The Duwamish Tribe

In honor of the special game this weekend, our staff created this temporary display in our museum space. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’š

Slahal, also called the bone game, is one of many games played by Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. A team member held up their hands, each of which contained a small bone, and the members of the opposite team tried to guess if a marked bone was in the right or left hand. Slahal often also involved gambling between the teams. Stakes could be high, and the games might last for hours.

Seattleโ€™s History

OUR HISTORY

The Duwamish people have been in the Seattle/Greater King County area since time immemorial. Our stories, such as "North Wind, South Wind", tell of the last Ice Age, and an Ice Weir breaking over the Duwamish River.

We were the first signatories on the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1855, signed by Chief Si'ahl, who was chief of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes.
