The holiday marks the day in 1865 when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached enslaved people in Texas, nearly two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the decree and with this more than 250,000 enslaved people were finally freed. In 2021, President Biden declared June 19 a federal holiday. Juneteenth celebrations have been ongoing for more than 150 years before this official holiday was declared.
