This October, we are proud to partner with SAFE SBC as part of our ongoing commitment through our Art with Heart program at Art & Soul. Each piece of art you purchase not only supports our artists and allows us to keep bringing new programs to the gallery, it stretches into our community and beyond through our support of non-profits organizations.

The Strategic Alliance to Fight Exploitation Santa Barbara County (SAFE SBC) is a nonprofit working to create a community where every person can live free from trafficking and exploitation. Through education, awareness, and collaboration, SAFE SBC helps people recognize the signs of both s*x and labor trafficking, understand how to respond, and work together to prevent exploitation before it happens.

Alongside a countywide network of partner agencies, SAFE SBC also supports survivors as they rebuild their lives, regain independence, and move forward with dignity and hope. As the first organization of its kind in California, SAFE SBC believes lasting change begins with a community that is informed, connected, and willing to act.

Freedom to Flourish, the 3rd annual gala for SAFE SBC taking place October 10th, is an evening of purpose and possibility, gathering the community in Santa Barbara to celebrate precious lives impacted through the progress made in our unified fight against human trafficking and exploitation. The Clearing by Hilary Brock (shown here) will be auctioned at the gala to benefit SAFE SBC. Tickets for the gala can be purchased on the SAFE SBC website.

Throughout September, the Atelier Gallery at Art & Soul becomes part studio, part exhibition as Sylvan Butera Rich creates a monumental 7’ × 7’ painting on canvas over the course of the month. Experience the artwork as it takes shape, return throughout the month to see its evolution, and watch a blank canvas gradually become a finished piece.

The painting will be offered through a month-long auction, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Unity Shoppe, Art & Soul’s nonprofit partner for September. Bidding will remain open as the work evolves, giving collectors the unusual opportunity to bid on a piece before its final form is revealed.

At the conclusion of the month, the winning bidder may either add the finished work to their own collection or donate it to Unity Shoppe, creating a lasting work of art for the organization and the community it serves.

This month-long project brings art, artist, gallery, and community together in support of our neighbors. Stop in on Saturdays from 11-1p on your way to or from the Farmers Market, grab a coffee or tea, and come see what’s in the making!

As summer winds down, so does Cosas de la Vida: The Things of Life, featuring the paintings of Pedro De La Cruz and Olivia Joffrey. And with temperatures heating up, we’re keeping things cool at Art & Soul—the AC is cranking, the w**e is chilled, and 1323 State Street is the perfect place to escape the heat.

For the past six weeks, the gallery has been filled with color, observation, and the familiar complexities of everyday life. Presented during Fiesta season, this exhibition has felt especially at home here—celebrating California, culture and community while finding beauty and meaning in the things that connect us.

Join us this Sunday, August 30th from 3–5pm with Pedro and Olivia, a chilled glass of w**e, and a final afternoon with Cosas de la Vida. If there’s a piece you’ve been thinking about—or one you haven’t yet discovered—come for one last look at how much we share in these things of life.
